Install and launch Houdini first, then check that your specific Modeler release supports your Houdini version. Modeler is a third-party modeling toolkit, not a built-in SideFX component, so you install it separately and follow the developer’s current release instructions for downloading, installation, and activation. Houdini package files can configure plugin paths, but an older Modeler package example should not be treated as a current installer recipe.
1. Install Houdini and confirm it launches
Modeler runs inside Houdini, so set up the host application before installing the toolkit. SideFX describes its Houdini Installer as the tool for installing and managing Houdini builds. Its Installer FAQ lists platform-specific installer options; those install Houdini, not Modeler.
- Download and run the SideFX Installer for your operating system, following SideFX’s instructions.
- Use the installer to install the Houdini build you intend to use.
- Launch Houdini once and confirm it opens successfully before proceeding.
2. Check Modeler and Houdini compatibility
Before downloading Modeler, compare the exact Modeler release with your Houdini version using the developer’s current compatibility notes. A report updated October 5, 2026 says Modeler 26.5 adds Houdini 22 compatibility and describes Modeler 26 as compatible with Houdini 21.0 and later. That report does not provide a complete build-by-build compatibility matrix, so verify your particular combination rather than assuming every Houdini 21.0-or-later build is supported. 3. Download, install, and activate Modeler using current instructions
Get Modeler from the developer’s current product page and follow the instructions for that release, including any activation steps. Do not infer a current download location, file layout, installation path, or licensing procedure from older forum posts: these details can change between releases, and the available release reporting does not establish them for Modeler 26.5.

Modeler’s developer has previously shown a Houdini package configuration, but that 2020 example is historical context, not a substitute for the current release’s installation directions. If the developer’s current instructions call for manual package setup, use the package locations and paths specified for that release.
4. Understand Houdini package files
Houdini packages provide a JSON-based way to configure plugins and environment variables. SideFX documents that Houdini scans configured package directories, including the user’s preferences packages directory, which it creates automatically. The official Houdini packages documentation explains the format and search locations.

In a March 25, 2020 SideFX forum reply, Modeler developer Alexey Vanzhula shared an example package that set both HOUDINI_PATH and MODELER_PATH to $HOUDINI_PACKAGE_PATH/../modeler. This shows the general kind of configuration Houdini packages can provide; it is not a safe path to copy blindly. The correct location depends on where the current Modeler release is installed. Consult the developer’s current instructions before creating or editing a package file. The dated example is in the SideFX Modeler 1.0 discussion.
5. Restart Houdini and verify the setup
After following the release-specific installation steps or changing package configuration, restart Houdini so it can load the setup. Then check the developer’s instructions for where that release’s Modeler interface or tools should appear. The available documentation does not establish current menu names or a release-specific troubleshooting sequence, so use the developer’s guidance if Modeler does not appear as expected.
