Neither PlayStation Store sales nor disc copies are always cheaper. Compare the same game and edition at the current digital sale price, new-disc price, and pre-owned price. In one July 2026 comparison of 19 popular PlayStation games, Store sale prices were lowest for 10, used discs for seven, and two were roughly tied.
Which is cheaper: a Store sale or a disc?
It depends on the title, edition, and date you shop. PlayStation Store promotions can make a digital download the lowest-priced option, while pre-owned discs can beat the regular Store price or even a sale price. Sony describes the Store as hosting sales, promotions, and discounts on digital games and add-ons; its US deals page lists current offers, which change over time.
Ars Technica compared 19 current top-selling PlayStation games in July 2026. Digital sale pricing was the cheapest option for 10 games, used discs for seven, and two were approximately tied. The comparison looked at new discs at Amazon and pre-owned prices at GameStop and eBay, with adjustments in some cases for included DLC or PS4-to-PS5 upgrade costs. It is a limited sample, not a market-wide survey or a rule for every game.
For one dated example from that comparison, a pre-owned GameStop copy of Dark Souls III was reported at $10 less than its $30 PlayStation Store sale price. That historical comparison is not a current quote.

How to compare the same game fairly
- Match the exact game and edition. Check whether the disc and digital listings include the same add-ons, DLC, or other extras, and whether each is the PS5 version or a PS4 version with a paid upgrade.
- Check the Store price and offer dates. Look at the live PlayStation Store deals page and note when the offer ends. A sale price is temporary, not a stable reference price.
- Compare both new and pre-owned discs. Check current listings for the same edition and account for delivery charges and local taxes. Prices and availability differ by seller and location.
- Include your console model in the calculation. A digital-only PS5 cannot use a disc unless it supports a compatible add-on drive. Confirm compatibility and any setup requirements before treating a disc listing as an option.
- Consider resale only as a possibility. Selling a disc later may reduce its net cost, but the amount depends on the game, condition, demand, and marketplace; do not assume a particular resale value.
When a digital sale makes more sense
- The Store’s current sale price is lower than the equivalent new and pre-owned disc prices.
- You have a digital-only PS5 that does not support a compatible disc drive.
- You prefer downloading games and do not want to buy, store, or resell discs.
PlayStation’s US deals page is the place to check active promotions. Its event calendar also shows that sales recur, but a future discount on a particular game is not guaranteed. The 2026 US calendar listed Spring Sale dates of March 25–April 22, Days of Play dates of May 27–June 10, and Summer Sale dates of July 15–August 12. All three windows had ended by October 7, 2026, so they are examples of past sale timing, not current offers.
When a physical copy may be the better buy
- A pre-owned copy costs less than the Store offer for the same edition.
- You want the option of reselling or lending a disc, subject to the applicable marketplace and circumstances.
- You already own a compatible disc-equipped PS5 and find a new or used copy at a better total price.
Sony’s buying guide distinguishes the disc-equipped PS5 from the PS5 Digital Edition, which has no built-in drive. Sony says the separately sold disc drive is intended for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups or PS5 Pro; it supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD, and requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Check your exact model against Sony’s current disc-drive compatibility and setup information before buying a drive or disc.

What Sony’s 2028 disc announcement means
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical game-disc production for new games released on PlayStation consoles would be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony said new releases from that point will be available through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The announcement says the change does not affect games that had already released, or were due to release before January 2028, in disc format. It does not mean compatible existing PS5 discs stop working.
The announcement concerns new releases after the stated cutoff; it does not establish that every game currently available will remain available digitally or physically for any particular length of time. Sony’s full statement is available in its July 1, 2026 announcement.
