Sonic X Shadow Generations is the right pick if you want two campaigns in one purchase: a full remaster of Sonic Generations (Classic and Modern Sonic) plus a new, separate Shadow-led adventure. If you only want one style of Sonic game, or you already own and love the original Generations, the choice depends on how much the new Shadow campaign matters to you. This guide gives you the questions to ask, the platform and edition details that change the decision, and the limits of what can be said about other Sonic titles.
What you actually get in the package
SEGA announced the game on October 25, 2024, and describes it as a one-player high-speed action adventure. Its tagline: “Enjoy two unique high-speed adventures in one incredible collection!” (SEGA’s release announcement).
Campaign one: remastered Sonic Generations
SEGA calls this a complete remaster of Sonic Generations: a collection of 2D and 3D stages with upgraded visuals and bonus content. Classic and Modern Sonic reunite, you can rescue hidden Chao, and there is Casino Nights pinball content.
Campaign two: Shadow Generations
This is a new standalone campaign, not a skin or small add-on. Shadow faces Black Doom, travels through stages from his history, explores an expansive hub, and uses Doom Powers for combat, water traversal and platforming challenges.

A decision framework for choosing between Sonic games
1. Which style of Sonic do you want?
If you want Classic and Modern Sonic stages and a Shadow-led story with a hub world, this package covers both. If another Sonic game offers a style or story you prefer, weigh that against what is listed above. Check that game’s own description rather than assuming it matches this one.
2. Do you already own Sonic Generations?
The Sonic half is a remaster, while the Shadow half is new, according to SEGA. If you have played Generations, the question is whether upgraded visuals, bonus content and an entirely new Shadow campaign justify buying again. If you have not, the package is the more complete way in, since you get both campaigns.

4. Which edition suits you?
| Edition | What SEGA says it includes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | The base game | Players who want the two campaigns only |
| Digital Deluxe | Base game, Digital Deluxe Season Pass, Terios skin, extra BGM, Sonic Generations skill points, digital artbook and soundtrack, plus additional Shadow content | Players who value digital extras and DLC |

Switch 2 and DLC details that affect the purchase
Switch 2 physical copy is a game-key card
SEGA says the Switch 2 physical edition uses a game-key card. Playing it for the first time requires broadband internet and a 24 GB download, and updates and other content may need more space. The card alone does not hold the full install.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack
In an April 3, 2025 announcement tied to Switch 2, SEGA said this pack adds movie-inspired stages in Tokyo and a movie Shadow skin. It requires the base game. It is included in Digital Deluxe or available through a Digital Deluxe upgrade. Treat DLC inclusion as edition- and platform-specific and verify the current store page.

SEGA announced on January 24, 2025 that the game had sold more than two million units worldwide, counting physical and downloaded copies across platforms. That is a dated publisher-reported milestone, not a current total, and it does not show the game is better than other Sonic titles.

What this comparison can and can’t tell you
The information here comes from official SEGA materials. These establish features, platforms, formats, editions and the 2025 sales figure. They do not offer independent performance testing or a full review of every other Sonic game, so no claim is made that this is the best Sonic game. Use the framework above to match campaign style, platform, prior ownership and edition to your own situation.
The Bottom Line
Buy Sonic X Shadow Generations if you want both a remastered Classic/Modern Sonic collection and a new Shadow campaign on your platform. If you already own Sonic Generations, the Shadow campaign is the main reason to upgrade. Check your platform’s format and the current local price before choosing an edition.
