Starlink connects a home to the internet by sending data over radio from an outdoor user terminal to satellites in low Earth orbit. The traffic then reaches the wider internet through a ground gateway, either directly or after passing between satellites over optical laser links. Fiber may carry traffic elsewhere in Starlink’s ground network, but it does not have to run to the home.
How Starlink carries data from a home to the internet
A Starlink connection is a wireless link between the home and space, followed by satellite routing and terrestrial network connections. A typical request follows this path:
- Device to router: A phone, computer, or TV sends data over the home’s Wi-Fi to the Starlink router.
- Router to terminal: The router passes the data through the kit’s cabling and power/network equipment to the outdoor user terminal, commonly called the dish.
- Terminal to satellite: The terminal’s electronically steered phased-array antenna communicates by radio with a Starlink satellite in view.
- Satellite toward a gateway: The satellite routes traffic toward a ground gateway. Depending on the route, it may first pass data to other satellites using optical inter-satellite laser links.
- Gateway to the internet: A gateway connects the satellite network to Starlink’s ground backbone and onward to internet points of presence and upstream networks. Starlink’s latency architecture describes leased fiber between gateway sites and points of presence.
- Response back to the home: The response returns through the network to the terminal, router, and device. Because satellites move, the serving satellite and route can change.
The key distinction is that Starlink replaces the wired connection from the provider to the home with a satellite radio link. It does not mean fiber is absent from every part of the network.
Why Starlink uses low Earth orbit
Starlink places its satellites much closer to Earth than geostationary satellites. Its technology page gives an altitude of about 550 km for Starlink satellites, compared with 35,786 km for geostationary orbit. The shorter distance can reduce signal travel time.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Starlink’s latency document says the satellite portion of a connection’s round trip is usually under 10 ms. That is not the same as the latency a user sees to an online service: the total also depends on radio scheduling, gateway routing, network processing, congestion, and the route to the destination. Laser links can help route traffic in remote areas or around ground-network constraints, but their effect on latency depends on the path.
What the Starlink home equipment does
The user terminal
The outdoor terminal is the part of the kit that communicates with satellites. Starlink identifies its Standard terminal as an electronic phased array. It needs an adequately open view of the sky to maintain a reliable connection.

The router and home Wi-Fi
The router distributes the connection to devices inside the home over Wi-Fi. Starlink’s regional Standard kit page lists a Gen 3 router with Wi-Fi 6, coverage of up to 297 m², two Ethernet LAN ports, and support for specified Starlink mesh nodes. These are product-page specifications for that offering, not a guarantee of coverage in every home. Walls, layout, interference, and router placement affect real Wi-Fi coverage.
A mesh node may extend Wi-Fi to rooms farther from the router; it does not strengthen or improve the satellite link. The router handles the home network, while the terminal handles communication with satellites.

Placement and mounting
The regional kit listing includes a terminal, kickstand, Gen 3 router, 15 m Starlink cable, AC cable, and power supply. Starlink says permanent mounts designed to avoid obstructions are available as accessories after ordering. The right mount depends on the roof, wall, pole, terminal generation, and site conditions, so a roof mount should not be assumed to be included in every kit.
What speeds and latency can a household expect?
Starlink’s general service specification lists typical land-user downloads of 25–220 Mbps, uploads of 5–20 Mbps, and latency of 25–60 ms. These are company specifications, not a promise for a particular address; Starlink says performance varies by location, time of day, service plan, and network load, and that speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Separately, in a July 2025 company update, Starlink reported a median U.S. peak-hour download speed near 200 Mbps among more than 2 million active customers. That is a dated company-reported aggregate, not the expected speed for every household. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the typical service-specification range.
Why two Starlink homes can perform differently
- Location and network load: Service conditions vary by area and time, and shared radio beams are subject to scheduling and congestion.
- Plan priority: The service plan can affect performance.
- Sky obstructions: An obstructed terminal view can interrupt or degrade the satellite connection.
- Route and gateway distance: The route through satellites, gateways, points of presence, and the destination network affects latency.
- Household Wi-Fi: Router placement, walls, and interference affect device performance even when the satellite connection is working well.
What “without fiber cables” means—and does not mean
Starlink does not require a fiber cable from the street or a local provider’s network directly into the house. The home-to-network connection starts as a radio link from the terminal to a satellite. Beyond that link, traffic can travel through gateways and Starlink’s terrestrial backbone, where fiber may be used.

That distinction also means Starlink is not inherently faster than fiber. The available specifications describe Starlink’s typical service range and factors that affect it; they do not establish a universal speed comparison. A household’s result depends on its location, plan, network conditions, installation, and Wi-Fi setup.
