Start by checking the sensor’s fit, placement, and measurement conditions—but remember that a better-fitting smartwatch or ring does not become a medical device. Wearables and other monitors can use different technologies, measure at different body sites, and respond differently to movement or physiology. If a reading conflicts with how you feel, take your symptoms seriously and contact a healthcare professional when concerned.

First, identify what is inconsistent

Note which measurement differs—such as heart rate or oxygen saturation—and when each reading was taken. Record whether you were resting or exercising, moving or still, warm or cold, and how the device was positioned. A reading taken during exercise cannot be meaningfully compared with one taken later at rest; for a useful comparison, devices should measure at roughly the same time and under similar conditions.

Also distinguish a wrist-worn device from a separate fingertip pulse oximeter. The instructions for one type do not automatically apply to the other.

Improve wrist heart-rate readings

Check fit and placement

For Fitbit, Google recommends wearing the device on top of the wrist, with the back touching the skin and about a finger’s width above the wrist bone when resting. During exercise, a slightly tighter, higher position may help maintain contact, but the band should not constrict. Apple likewise recommends a snug, comfortable fit with skin contact above the wrist bone. Follow the instructions for your specific model: Google Fitbit heart-rate guidance and Apple Watch wearing guidance.

Reduce motion and account for conditions

Movement, wrist position, activity, and cold can affect wrist-based readings. Google also notes that heart rate itself can change with temperature, stress, alcohol or caffeine, illness-related immune response, and medication use. A higher or lower number may therefore reflect a real change in your body, not just a sensor problem. Abrupt movement during sleep can also produce elevated readings.

For a comparison, measure under similar conditions and make sure the devices are positioned as their manufacturers recommend. A chest strap and a wrist tracker may disagree because they use different technologies; Google explains that Fitbit uses green LEDs and light-sensitive photodiodes to detect blood-volume changes in wrist capillaries. Neither a difference nor a single reading establishes which device is correct. Avoid treating one device as the winner without validation for the particular models and conditions involved.

Get a steadier fingertip pulse-oximeter reading

For a fingertip pulse oximeter, the FDA advises following the device’s instructions, warming and relaxing your hand, keeping it still and below heart level, removing nail polish from the measurement finger, and waiting for one steady number. These tips are for fingertip pulse oximeters; do not assume they apply to a watch’s oxygen sensor. See the FDA’s Pulse Oximeter Basics.

Pulse-oximeter accuracy can be affected by poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, tobacco use, and nail polish. The FDA says current scientific evidence suggests some performance differences between people with lighter and darker skin pigmentation. A reading is an estimate, not a diagnosis.

Product purpose and regulatory status also vary. Some pulse oximeters are intended for medical purposes, while general-wellness products are not evaluated by the FDA for clinical decision-making or to determine whether to seek medical intervention. The FDA says only a small number of medical-purpose pulse oximeters are available over the counter following clearance. Do not assume every product sold as a pulse oximeter has the same status.

Do not use a smartwatch or ring for glucose measurement

The FDA says it has not authorized, cleared, or approved a smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate glucose on its own. Its safety communication says: “Do not buy or use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose levels.” If your care depends on accurate glucose measurements, ask a healthcare provider about an appropriate FDA-authorized device. Read the FDA safety communication issued February 21, 2024.

When to contact a healthcare professional

Do not dismiss symptoms because a wearable shows a reassuring number, and do not make treatment decisions from a consumer reading alone. Keep track of what you feel and when readings occur. Contact a healthcare professional if you are concerned; seek prompt medical advice when symptoms are serious or worsening. The FDA advises pulse-oximeter users to consider symptoms alongside readings, and Google recommends contacting a physician about concerns with heart-rate data.
