PlayStation Plus Extra is better value if you expect to play games currently in its Game Catalog; Essential is usually the more focused fit if you mainly want online multiplayer and monthly games. Both plans include those core benefits, so paying for Extra makes sense only when its additional catalog access and Ubisoft+ Classics are worth the difference to you.
What’s the difference between PlayStation Plus Essential and Extra?
Extra includes the benefits of Essential, then adds access to the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. PlayStation describes the catalog as containing hundreds of games, with new titles added regularly; the specific lineup can change over time and vary by plan. See PlayStation’s US plan and games comparison and its catalog description.
| Benefit | Essential | Extra |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly games | Included | Included |
| Online multiplayer | Included | Included |
| Discounts, cloud storage, Share Play, and exclusive content | Included | Included as part of Essential benefits |
| Game Catalog access | Not included | Included; titles change over time and by plan |
| Ubisoft+ Classics | Not included | Included |
PlayStation’s page says that PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That describes the pace of future additions, not the removal of all existing PS4 games from the catalog.
Do you need Extra for online multiplayer?
No. PlayStation Support says most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, and both Essential and Extra include that benefit. If online play is the main reason you subscribe, Essential provides it without paying for Extra’s catalog access. Some games may have different requirements, so check the individual game’s details. See PlayStation Support’s online multiplayer guidance.

How much more does Extra cost?
The following prices are displayed on PlayStation’s US subscription page. Prices and offers can differ by region or account, so check the current price shown to you before subscribing. PlayStation says subscriptions renew until canceled. See the US subscription page.
| Billing period | Essential (US) | Extra (US) | Extra over Essential |
|---|---|---|---|
| One month | $10.99 | $16.99 | $6.00 |
| Three months | $27.99 | $43.99 | $16.00 |
| Twelve months | $79.99 | $134.99 | $55.00 |
The longer billing periods have different effective monthly costs, but the right comparison is the total price and period you would actually choose—not a theoretical monthly rate if you would not otherwise pay for that term.

How to decide whether Extra is worth it
- Check the price for your region and billing period. Compare the current checkout prices for both plans; the US prices above are not guaranteed to apply to other locations or accounts.
- Look at the games currently in the Extra Game Catalog. Focus on titles you genuinely intend to play while they are available, rather than the catalog’s overall size. PlayStation warns that availability changes over time and by plan.
- Ask whether the added benefits justify the difference. If catalog games or Ubisoft+ Classics make the extra cost worthwhile to you, Extra can be a good fit. If monthly games and online multiplayer meet your needs, Essential covers those benefits.
There is no universal break-even number: the value depends on the current lineup, how much of it you will play, and the price offered to you. A game catalog is not the same as permanent ownership, so do not base the decision on a title you may not get around to playing before availability changes.
