To improve Wi-Fi extender speed, first make sure the extender has a strong, stable connection to the router. Then check which device and Wi-Fi band you are using, adjust placement, and retest after each change. An extender placed inside the dead zone may have too little signal to repeat; it can extend coverage, but it cannot increase the internet speed supplied by your ISP.
Why a Wi-Fi extender can feel slow
An extender receives data from the router and retransmits it to nearby devices. That extra wireless hop can constrain throughput, especially when the extender uses the same radio for both the router link and client traffic. Some designs use separate radios or a dedicated backhaul to reduce the effect, but the result depends on the equipment and setup. HP explains how extenders and backhaul affect performance.
The extender is only one part of the connection. The router’s connection to the internet, the client device’s Wi-Fi capabilities, the band in use, distance, walls, and local channel congestion can all affect the speed you see. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Google’s slow Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps cover several of these factors. A signal-strength indicator can help you spot a weak link, but it does not tell you the internet speed you will receive.
Measure the problem before changing settings
- Test near the router. Use the same device and speed-test method you will use for later checks. This gives you a comparison point for the internet connection and device.
- Test at the usual trouble spot. Note whether the device is connected to the extender or directly to the router, and identify the Wi-Fi band if your device or extender app shows it.
- Retest after each adjustment. Change one thing at a time, use the same device and test method, and compare results from the same locations. This helps identify whether a placement or connection change made a difference.
If speeds are also poor near the router, the extender may not be the cause. Check the router, ISP connection, client device, and local congestion before changing extender hardware.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Place the extender where its router link is strong
Position the extender between the router and the area with weak coverage—not at the far end of the dead zone. It needs a usable signal from the router to retransmit. NETGEAR recommends placing an extender about halfway between the router and the client while keeping it within the router’s range; use the device’s status display or app as a guide, then confirm with a speed test. See NETGEAR’s extender placement guidance.
Distance suggestions are only starting points. TP-Link gives approximate ranges of 25–40 feet for certain external-antenna models and 20–35 feet for internal-antenna models, assuming a strong router signal and few obstacles. These are vendor guidelines, not universal limits; walls and the building layout may mean the extender needs to be closer. See TP-Link’s placement and AP-mode guidance.

Raise the extender into an open position near router height—TP-Link suggests around four feet for its guidance—and avoid placing it on the floor, inside a cabinet, behind thick walls, or beside large metal surfaces or mirrors. For models with external antennas, TP-Link recommends keeping them vertical. Microwaves and cordless phones can also contribute to interference, so try moving the extender away from them. TP-Link describes placement as a major factor in extender performance; treat that as its vendor guidance, not as a guarantee of a particular speed increase.
Check the band and the device connection
Confirm that the client is actually connected to the extender. Depending on the router and extender, the network name may be shared or the extender may have a separate name; check the connected network and the extender’s app or status page if you are unsure.

The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz can offer higher speeds at shorter distances. Which band works better depends on the client, extender, obstacles, and interference in your home. If the extender or router provides separate network names or band information, compare results with the device connected to each available band rather than assuming one is always faster.
Try Ethernet backhaul if wireless placement is not enough
If the extender cannot maintain a good wireless link to the router from a useful location, check whether your specific model supports Access Point (AP) mode. In supported models, an Ethernet cable from router to extender can provide the connection back to the router, while the extender provides Wi-Fi coverage near the wired location. Follow the model’s manual for enabling AP mode and connecting the cable; menu names and setup steps vary.

This option depends on being able to run Ethernet to the desired location and on the extender supporting AP mode. If neither is practical, the wireless link remains dependent on where the extender can receive a stable router signal.

Consider a mesh system if you still have coverage gaps after checking placement and, where practical, trying a supported wired AP setup. Mesh may suit a layout that needs coverage across multiple rooms, but it is not a guaranteed speed fix for every home. Compare the system’s compatibility with your existing router, wired-backhaul support, capacity for your devices, coverage needs, and cost before replacing equipment. First confirm that the slow connection is not also present near the router.
