No single setting is the biggest battery drain on every phone. The answer depends on your device, your apps, your signal and how you use the screen. The fastest way to find yours is the phone’s own battery report. The usual suspects are the screen (brightness and how long it stays on), apps working in the background, and long stretches of navigation, video, gaming, hotspot or mobile-data use. Official guidance from Apple and Google points to those same areas.
Step 1: Find your own biggest drains
Neither Apple nor Google publishes a ranking of how much battery each setting uses, and no official source gives a comparable percentage or number of extra hours per setting. So treat any “this setting saves 20%” claim with suspicion. Your phone’s usage data is better evidence.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the daily usage chart and any suggestions or insights shown.
- Look at App and System Activity. Apple says it can show app percentages, on-screen versus background time, low cellular coverage and notification activity (Apple Support).
Background activity can include directions, music playback, photo syncing and mail fetching. Low cellular coverage is worth noticing too, because a phone struggling for signal can drain faster.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Check which apps used the most power and review their background usage.
Google recommends leaving app battery use set to Optimized in general (Pixel Help).

Step 2: Change the screen settings first

- Lower brightness or turn on automatic brightness.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner.
- Try dark theme on Android as a secondary tweak. Google lists it as an option, but the benefit depends on your phone, display and apps, so don’t expect a big gain.
The trade-off is comfort: a dimmer screen is harder to read in sunlight, and a short timeout can interrupt reading.
Step 3: Rein in background activity selectively
If the battery report shows an app using power while you aren’t using it, limit that app’s background activity. Don’t restrict everything. Restricted apps may sync late or deliver notifications late, so keep full background access for messaging, email or other apps whose timely alerts matter to you.

- Prolonged navigation or GPS use
- Video and streaming
- Graphics-heavy games
- Hotspot use
- Heavy mobile-data use
Don’t switch off location and connectivity wholesale. Google notes some apps and features won’t work with location access off. Instead, turn off what you aren’t using, and only when it suits you.
Heat matters as well. Google says: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Keep the phone out of hot cars and direct sun where you can.

Step 5: Use battery saver for a temporary boost
iPhone Low Power Mode
Turn it on under Settings > Battery. On newer models the path includes Battery > Power Mode. According to Apple, it can:
- Reduce display brightness and shorten Auto-Lock
- Reduce visual effects
- Pause iCloud Photos
- Disable automatic downloads and email fetch
- Disable Background App Refresh
- Limit supported high-refresh-rate displays to 60 Hz
Exact effects depend on the model.
Android Battery Saver
It is commonly found under Settings > Battery, though manufacturers may move it. It can limit or turn off background activity, network connections, features and apps, so some actions may be delayed (Google Android Help). Use it when you need to stretch a charge, not as a permanent setting if you rely on instant syncing.
When high drain isn’t a setting
After a software update, a Pixel may use more battery temporarily while it downloads and optimizes software. If unusually high drain continues after that, Google’s Fix battery drain problem page advises further troubleshooting. Apple has a similar page, If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly.
Consider a battery replacement only if your phone’s own battery health or service indicator supports it. A charger or power bank doesn’t reduce consumption.
