Starlink’s Direct to Cell service reaches phones through participating mobile carriers, and a phone’s age or carrier alone does not confirm eligibility. In the U.S., T-Mobile’s Starlink-powered service is called T-Satellite. Check your exact phone against T-Mobile’s current support list, then confirm your plan or enrollment and coverage at your location.
How to tell whether your phone and carrier are eligible
- Check the exact phone model. T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work with T-Satellite, but not every recent phone is supported. Use T-Mobile’s current support page to check your device rather than relying on its brand, age, or operating system.
- Confirm carrier and plan access. T-Satellite is T-Mobile’s Starlink-powered offer. T-Mobile says noncustomers can also enroll. As of October 7, 2026, T-Mobile lists the service as included with Experience Beyond 2.0 or Better Value plans, and says other T-Mobile customers and noncustomers can enroll for $10 per month. Its page says the offer auto-renews monthly and can be canceled in the T-Life app. Plan names, price, and terms can change, so verify them on the current page before enrolling.
- Check coverage where you will use it. T-Mobile describes availability in most outdoor areas of the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Japan where the sky is visible. Its FAQ also identifies the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and parts of southern Alaska. Coverage varies by location and network conditions; use T-Mobile’s current coverage map for a specific place.
If your carrier is not T-Mobile, do not assume that ordinary service with that carrier includes Starlink texting. Check whether it currently offers a Direct to Cell service in your country and whether your plan and device qualify. Starlink’s February 2025 announcement named T-Mobile in the U.S. and One NZ in New Zealand as initial commercial messaging partners; that dated announcement is not a current global eligibility list. What happens when the phone connects
T-Mobile says no phone settings change is needed: an eligible phone connects automatically when ordinary cellular service is unavailable and satellite service is available. The displayed network name may be “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink.”
Starlink describes Direct to Cell satellites as working much like cell towers in space, while partner mobile operators provide LTE spectrum. In practice, eligibility still depends on the carrier offer, supported handset, enrollment, and coverage—not simply having a phone that can see the sky.

What satellite texting can and cannot do
T-Mobile lists SMS, MMS, and RCS text, audio, and picture messaging; location sharing; selected satellite-ready apps; and WhatsApp voice chat. Satellite data has lower speeds and limited capacity compared with ordinary cellular data. The supported app list can change, so consult T-Mobile’s current support page for the apps available to you.
Messages may take longer than usual. Because satellites move, the phone may disconnect from one and reconnect to another; T-Mobile says it will continue trying in the background, but coverage gaps, time-outs, and varying performance are possible. Treat the service as an option for intermittent connectivity, not a promise of immediate delivery.

Satellite texting is not a dependable emergency guarantee
T-Mobile’s Text to 911 by Satellite is text-only. The carrier warns that it may be delayed, limited, or unavailable, and that location accuracy may be affected. In some cases, a message may go to a national response center rather than a local 911 center. T-Mobile also says iPhone 14 and later have built-in satellite emergency service and are not eligible for T-Mobile Text to 911. Follow local emergency guidance and do not treat this feature as a guarantee of response.
