Menu names and feature availability vary by phone, Android version, region, and account type, so look for Safety or Safety & emergency if the steps below do not match your screen.
Add emergency contacts

Open the Safety app. It may be called Personal Safety in the Play Store or in settings, but appear as Safety in your app list. If prompted, sign in to your Google Account.

Tap Your info > Emergency contacts > Add contact.

Select a person from your existing contacts. Personal medical details can also be added under Your info.
Make emergency information visible while locked
Adding a contact does not automatically make your information visible from the lock screen. In the Safety app, open Emergency info access and turn on Show when locked if you want someone helping you to be able to view the information while the phone is locked. This also means someone holding the phone can see the configured information without unlocking it.

Schedule a Safety Check

Open the Safety app and tap Safety Check.

Choose a reason for the check-in and set its duration. Google documents durations of up to 24 hours.

Tap Next, select the emergency contacts to include, then tap Start.

When prompted, allow the Safety app to access location While in use.
Emergency Sharing also relies on location services being enabled and may not be available in every region or on every device. If Safety Check is missing, check your phone’s Safety or Safety & emergency settings; the app and its features are not available identically across Android brands.

What happens when the check-in is due
At the scheduled time, your phone gives you 60 seconds to respond. You can mark yourself safe, start sharing, or call emergency services. If you do not choose an option within that window, emergency sharing begins. You can stop the check or sharing from its notification.
If the phone is off or has no signal when the check-in is due, Google says the check remains active and may share the phone’s last known location. When emergency sharing starts, contacts may receive a link to your location and your remaining battery percentage. Contacts may also receive a text when you schedule a Safety Check if notifications are enabled. Emergency sharing can be stopped earlier and automatically ends after 24 hours.

Check availability and contact details
Google says Personal Safety is available on some Android devices and on all Pixel phones. Some features require Android 12 or later. Availability can also depend on permissions, location services, region, and whether the account is supervised. Google’s guidance says supervised users under the applicable age threshold cannot use Safety Check or Emergency Sharing; some supervised users above that threshold have phone-only availability.
On Pixel, you can check which Google Account holds a contact and whether it is labeled as an emergency contact in Contacts. You can also open Fix & manage > Emergency contacts to reach the Safety app’s emergency-contact list.

Start a check with Google Assistant
On supported Pixel devices, Google Assistant can start a Safety Check or Emergency Sharing by voice. This flow differs from setting up the check in the Safety app: an Assistant-started Safety Check does not text contacts when the check starts, and Assistant-started Emergency Sharing sends information to all emergency contacts rather than letting you choose recipients for that session.
