To check whether your phone supports satellite messaging, identify its exact model and software version, then verify the specific feature on the phone maker’s support page and your carrier’s current device list. Emergency SOS, messaging with contacts, and carrier satellite services are different capabilities; support depends on the phone, software, country, carrier, and rollout.
Check compatibility in six steps
- Find your exact model and software version. Open Settings → About (the wording varies by phone) and note the complete model name and software version. A brand or model family alone may not identify a supported variant.
- Decide what you mean by satellite messaging. Are you checking emergency contact with responders, ordinary messages to friends and family, or a carrier’s satellite service? Support for one does not establish support for the others.
- Check the phone maker’s official support page. Search for the named feature and your exact model. Read the requirements for software, setup, region, and any model or purchase-location exceptions.
- Check your carrier’s current list. Confirm that it names your model and the service you want, and look for rollout notes such as “coming soon.” Carrier lists apply to that carrier and market, not universally. For example, Rogers Business’ satellite-to-mobile device list identifies specific devices and features, with some entries marked “Coming soon.”
- Check whether the service is ready on the phone. Look in Settings for its status and follow the maker’s setup instructions. Use a manufacturer-provided demo if available; do not place an emergency call to test the feature.
- Account for the connection conditions. The phone generally needs to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Trees, terrain, buildings, and other site conditions can obstruct a connection. A compatible phone cannot overcome an unavailable service or unsupported model.
Identify which kind of satellite messaging you need
Emergency SOS
Emergency satellite features are designed to contact emergency services or request help. They are not automatically a way to send ordinary messages to contacts. Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS guidance describes an emergency feature, not general-purpose texting to friends and family: Google Pixel Help.
Messages with friends and family
Some phones support contact messaging by satellite, but setup and carrier requirements can apply. Apple documents Messages via satellite separately from Emergency SOS and says the Messages feature should not be used in emergencies; use Emergency SOS via satellite for that purpose.
Carrier satellite services
A carrier service may offer a mix of emergency functions, text, data, or alerts, and may work only on selected phones. Confirm the exact service and feature with your carrier rather than assuming a phone’s satellite feature carries over to a different network.

What current platform support pages say
Apple Messages via satellite
Apple says Messages via satellite works on iPhone 14 or later, all models, subject to regional, software, and other requirements. Its support page lists a minimum of iOS 18 in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and iOS 18.4 in Mexico. An active SIM is required. iMessage must be turned on before the iPhone is outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage; SMS via satellite requires carrier support. Apple lists the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan, with exceptions depending on where the iPhone was purchased. A clear view of the sky and horizon is needed outdoors. Check Apple’s current requirements and exceptions for your phone and location at Apple Support.
Google Pixel Satellite SOS
Google says Satellite SOS is available on Pixel devices since Pixel 9, except Pixel 9a. Its help page lists the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, countries in Europe, and Australia, but warns that network coverage, network conditions, and the relevant carrier’s government agency affect connectivity; the country list does not guarantee coverage. Required software and APIs must be updated, and the service must be registered with the satellite network. Google says users can check status in Settings and that Google Messages must be the default messaging app. Follow the on-screen prompts to point the phone; trees, terrain, or buildings may block the connection. Samsung Galaxy and carrier partnerships
Samsung’s U.S. announcement dated February 27, 2026, describes satellite communication on selected Galaxy phones through carrier partnerships and phased rollout. It says T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink supports T911, text, and data on selected Galaxy flagship and A-series models released after the Galaxy S21 series since 2025. Samsung says Verizon offers eSOS and text services on Galaxy flagship models following the Galaxy S25 series, and that it is working with AT&T. Samsung cautions that compatible devices, features, market, network, and OS/One UI version can vary. Consult the Samsung U.S. announcement and your carrier for current availability.
Samsung’s global announcement describes phased partnerships in North America, Europe, and Japan. It names Virgin Media O2 in the U.K., trials with MasOrange in Spain, and KDDI satellite text/data and earthquake and tsunami warning functions on selected Galaxy S22-and-later flagship and Galaxy A-series devices in Japan; further Japanese operator availability was described as starting in 2026. These are rollout descriptions, not a guarantee of present service in a particular location. Verify current availability with the operator. See Samsung’s global announcement.

Compare services using the details that determine compatibility
When you compare two phones or services, check each of these items rather than relying on a broad “satellite capable” label:
- Exact supported phone model and variant.
- Whether the feature is emergency-only or supports ordinary messages to contacts.
- Carrier, service, and any plan requirements.
- Supported country or region, including local rollout status.
- Minimum operating system and any app or setup requirements.
- Whether the phone can get a clear view of the sky where you expect to use it.
If your phone is not listed
Do not infer compatibility from the manufacturer, series name, or the presence of another satellite feature. Check the maker’s requirements and ask your carrier about your exact model, service, market, and rollout status. If a list says “coming soon,” treat that as not yet available unless the carrier confirms otherwise. An accessory cannot make an unsupported phone or unavailable carrier service compatible.
