Do not treat the camera light as a complete indicator of every AI or data-processing event.
Start with the exact glasses, app, and region
Before interpreting a privacy setting, note the glasses’ model and generation, the companion app and its version, your country or region, and which features you use. Labels, availability, and behavior can vary across models and regions. Ray-Ban Meta’s documentation, for example, describes different capture-light behavior between generations and regional differences in feature disclosures.
For Ray-Ban Meta, use the Meta AI app and the current product FAQ for your specific model. For another brand, use that manufacturer’s app and privacy documentation; the Ray-Ban Meta controls below should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
Audit the app’s privacy and data controls
In the companion app, look for settings or sections covering glasses privacy, Meta AI, camera use, voice, activity log, notifications, and cloud media. App navigation and exact labels may change, so search the current settings rather than relying on a universal menu path. Meta says capture, voice, notifications, and shared-information preferences can be managed in the Meta AI app. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes Meta AI and Camera use toggles, voice activity access, and cloud-processing controls. For each setting, record whether it is on, what feature it affects, and what the app says happens to data. A toggle may govern one kind of processing without disabling other capture or AI functions.
- Camera and Meta AI: Check whether camera-based AI features are enabled and what happens when you ask about what you see.
- Voice: Review voice controls, follow-up conversation, access to voice activity, and any available deletion controls.
- Activity log: See which interactions are recorded or viewable, and whether you can download or delete activity.
- Cloud media: Check whether a cloud-processing option is enabled and what its retention terms are for your model and region.
- Notifications and sharing: Review notification permissions and integrations that may send or share content beyond the glasses and phone gallery.
Trace each action to its destination
“Recording” is not one data flow. A gallery capture, a phone import, a question to an AI assistant, and an optional cloud-media feature can have different destinations and uses. For Ray-Ban Meta, the manufacturer describes these distinctions as follows:

Meta also describes a Private Processing architecture for some AI-glasses workloads, using confidential virtual machines and encrypted transfer. That is Meta’s description of an architecture, not evidence that every feature or data flow uses it. Meta Engineering: Private Processing.
Review voice activity and deletion options
Open the app’s activity or voice-history area and check what interactions are available to view or download. Meta says voice recordings can be deleted and that deleted information will not be used for future training. Confirm the current app’s deletion scope: deleting a recording or activity item may not mean that every separately imported copy or shared item is removed from other services. Meta AI glasses help.

Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ describes a short period of continued microphone activity after a request when follow-up interaction is on. Speech during that period is recorded and processed, with the notification LED indicating audio processing. Check the current explanation for your region and settings rather than assuming voice behavior is identical across versions. Ray-Ban UK product FAQ.
Understand what the capture light does—and does not—tell you
The capture LED is useful as a bystander cue, but it is not a complete data-flow indicator. Meta describes it as a signal for photos and videos captured for the gallery. Ray-Ban says newer models may use the camera for AI without illuminating the capture LED; first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses still illuminate it during some AI features because of hardware limitations. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes the newer camera-based AI feature as not intended for sharing and says it removes identifiable information such as license plates or phone numbers. These are feature- and model-specific manufacturer statements, not a reason to infer that no image is being processed or transmitted when the light is off. Meta says second-generation glasses disable the camera when a covered LED is detected and that it is updating safeguards against physical tampering. That safeguard does not make the LED a universal indicator of AI processing. Meta privacy explanation.

- Identify the product: Write down the model, generation, app version, and region.
- Find the current controls: Review privacy, camera, AI, voice, activity-log, cloud-media, notification, and sharing settings in the companion app.
- Trace common actions separately: Check the documented destination for gallery capture, phone import, AI questions, voice commands, and optional cloud processing.
- Check retention and access: Look for how long data is kept, whether people may review it, and what deletion or download controls cover.
- Verify indicators feature by feature: Read what the camera light or audio indicator signals for the exact model; do not assume it signals every data transfer.
- Recheck after changes: App updates, new features, or a change of region can alter available controls or disclosures.
The available documentation here does not establish one universal data flow, menu path, or retention schedule for all smart-glasses brands. For your own device, use its manufacturer’s current privacy documentation and confirm each feature’s behavior directly in the app.

Be considerate when recording other people
A visible recording light does not replace consent or local rules. Meta recommends asking permission before capturing others and avoiding places where people expect privacy. In an Associated Press report dated October 5, 2026, Norway’s government was proposing a temporary ban in some settings, including places where privacy is particularly important; that report described a proposal, not an enacted general rule.
