First check whether the game is running standalone on Steam Frame or streaming from a PC. Those are separate execution paths, so a problem confined to one mode needs to be diagnosed in that mode. Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified rating describes a tested standalone experience and its defaults; it does not guarantee flawless performance or controls in every mode, game update, scene, or setup.
What Steam Frame Standalone Verified covers
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first headset that also supports standalone games. Its Standalone Verified program identifies Steam games—including VR and non-VR titles—that work standalone. The review focuses on the out-of-box experience, including performance with default graphics settings, readable text and interface elements on the built-in display, and a usable default configuration for Steam Frame Controllers.
Valve summarized the standard in its June 4, 2026 announcement: “The default graphics configuration needs to perform well, text and UI elements need to be clear and legible on the built-in display, and the default controller configuration needs to work well with the Steam Frame Controllers.” Read Valve’s announcement.
That scope is not a guarantee that every update, optional mode, individual scene, or streaming session will behave perfectly. Valve’s developer-facing compatibility guidance also addresses whether the default controls let players access game content and whether on-screen controller glyphs match the active input. It discusses Proton, the compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on SteamOS, and notes that blocking compatibility or performance problems can affect a game’s status. Do not treat Steam Deck Verified and Steam Frame Standalone Verified as interchangeable labels: they describe different device contexts and do not establish that a game will perform flawlessly on both.
Step 1: Identify where the game is running
Confirm whether the game is installed and executing on the headset or running on a PC and streamed to it. A symptom that appears only in one mode points toward a different part of the setup, though that is a practical diagnostic inference—not an official Valve troubleshooting rule. - Standalone: The game runs on Steam Frame itself. Use this path to investigate a problem with standalone performance or controls.
- PC streaming: The game runs on the PC and is sent to the headset. Investigate the PC session and streaming path separately from standalone behavior.
Step 2: Reproduce and record the symptom
Try to reproduce the same issue in the same mode before changing several things at once. Note the exact game, whether you are playing its VR or non-VR mode, where the slowdown or control problem occurs, and whether it started after a game or system update. These are useful details for diagnosis and support; Valve’s published materials do not prescribe a consumer reporting template.
Step 3: Isolate performance problems
If performance is poor in standalone play
Verify that the game is actually running on the headset, then note whether the slowdown happens throughout play or only in a particular scene or mode. Compare what you observe with the rating’s scope: Valve assesses performance with the default graphics configuration, as well as UI legibility. A rating does not establish that every optional setting or later update will perform the same way. The sources available do not establish a consumer settings recipe for resolving poor performance, so avoid assuming that a specific graphics change will fix it.

If performance is poor while streaming
Compare the game’s behavior in a local PC session with its behavior when streamed to Steam Frame. If the issue occurs in both, it may be present before the streaming step; if it appears only when streamed, focus your investigation on that path. This comparison is a reasoned way to isolate where the symptom appears, not a Valve-published checklist.
Keep hardware specifications in perspective
Valve lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of unified LPDDR5X RAM, 256GB or 1TB UFS storage options, a microSD slot, and Wi-Fi 6E for Steam Frame. These are product specifications, not independent performance test results or a promise about a particular game’s frame rate. A microSD card expands available storage; the listed slot does not establish it as a remedy for poor frame rate or control behavior. Valve’s Steam Frame specifications.

Step 4: Narrow down control problems
Describe exactly what is wrong rather than treating every input issue as the same fault. Check whether a button is missing, a button produces an unexpected action, motion or tracking behaves incorrectly, or the on-screen button prompts show the wrong controller. Valve’s review criteria cover a usable default controller configuration and appropriate controller glyphs; its developer documentation recommends the Steam Input API to help developers display the right glyphs.
If the problem is a mapping or prompt issue, record the physical input you used and the action or prompt shown on screen. The sources cited here do not establish current consumer-facing Steam Frame remapping steps, so they cannot support a specific menu path or claim that remapping will resolve the issue.

Step 5: Take useful evidence to support
Once you can reproduce the issue, record the game title, standalone or streamed mode, VR or non-VR mode, affected input or performance symptom, and whether it happens consistently. Include the point in the game where it occurs and whether it began after an update. Use current Steam support or the game’s own support channel for next steps; the cited Valve materials explain compatibility criteria but do not provide a Steam Frame-specific consumer troubleshooting flow.
