Controls vary by brand, model, generation, app, and software version, so identify your exact glasses and follow their current instructions rather than assuming one menu path works for every device.
Start with the exact glasses and their companion app
Before changing settings, note the glasses’ brand, model, generation, companion app, and software version. Then check the current app and manufacturer documentation for that specific device. The available guidance here documents Meta AI and Ray-Ban Meta controls; it does not establish equivalent menu paths for every smart-glasses brand.
In the Meta AI app, Meta says users can manage preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Ray-Ban’s FAQ also documents controls for Voice Control, System Alerts, communication integrations, and sharing. Names and availability may change with app updates, software versions, or region, so use the current instructions for your model: Meta AI glasses privacy guidance and Ray-Ban Meta FAQ.
Use this privacy checklist
- Review capture preferences. Look for controls related to photos, video, and other captures. Choose the settings that fit how you use the glasses.
- Review voice and notification controls. Check whether Voice Control or wake-word features and system alerts are enabled, and adjust them if you do not want to use them.
- Check connected services. Review social accounts and messaging integrations. Disconnect services you do not want to use, and check the audience settings of any account you keep connected.
- Review information-sharing options. Check the app’s privacy settings for choices about information shared with the manufacturer.
- Keep the capture indicator visible. Do not cover or tamper with it. On Meta glasses, the indicator is part of the device’s capture safeguards.
- Use the documented power control when you want the glasses inactive. Do not assume that muting voice control, closing the app, or disconnecting a social account turns off the camera or every other feature.
Know the difference between capturing, importing, and sharing
For Meta glasses, Meta describes these as separate steps. Gallery captures remain on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. After import, they are stored in the phone’s gallery; sending or posting them onward is a separate choice. You can therefore leave captures unimported, import only the media you want, and decide separately whether to share it. See Meta’s privacy guidance for its description of capture and import.

Check the destination before sharing from the glasses
Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes direct sharing to Instagram and Facebook Stories. Its instructions warn that media shared this way cannot be previewed or edited before posting, and that the Story audience follows the connected profile’s settings. Before using a voice command to share, confirm which account is connected and who can see its Stories. What the capture LED can—and cannot—do
Meta’s official AI glasses Q&A, published in July 2026, says: “The capture LED has no off switch.” Meta also says second-generation glasses disable the camera if the LED is detected as blocked, and that it is updating safeguards to detect physical tampering or destruction. These are Meta’s manufacturer statements; the blocking behavior is specifically described for second-generation glasses, and the tampering update may depend on model and rollout. Turn off Ray-Ban Meta glasses when you want them inactive
Ray-Ban’s FAQ locates the power switch on the inside of the left arm, near the hinge, and describes a notification LED signal when the glasses turn off. Use that documented switch when you want Ray-Ban Meta glasses inactive. For another brand or model, confirm the location and off-state behavior in its own instructions; do not assume that the same switch or signal applies.

Meta’s guidance recommends asking permission before capturing people nearby. Also check the rules of the venue and the requirements that apply where you are: recording laws and venue policies vary by jurisdiction and setting, and a device’s indicator or app settings do not replace those checks.
