For everyday fingerprints and smudges, turn off your iPhone, disconnect its cables, and wipe it gently with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Keep moisture out of openings. Apple permits certain disinfectant wipes on exterior surfaces, but they are optional for disinfection—not needed for routine cleaning—and abrasive materials or other cleaners can wear down the phone’s fingerprint-resistant coating.
How do I clean my iPhone without damaging it?
- Disconnect and power off. Unplug all cables and turn off the iPhone before cleaning.
- Wipe the exterior. Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, such as a lens cloth or microfiber cloth. Wipe gently; do not scrub with a rough material.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Do not let moisture enter openings, and do not submerge the phone in cleaning agents. Apple also says not to use compressed air.
Apple’s guidance is for careful exterior cleaning. It does not say that cleaning can restore a worn coating or repair a scratch.
Can I use alcohol wipes on my iPhone?
Yes, for disinfection, Apple says you may gently wipe exterior surfaces with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, a 75% ethyl alcohol wipe, or a Clorox Disinfecting Wipe. Check the wipe’s expiry date, avoid products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide, and keep liquid out of openings. After using a disinfectant wipe, wipe the exterior with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. These are disinfection options, not a requirement for ordinary cleaning.
Which cleaners and methods should I avoid?
- Do not use household or window cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
- Do not spray a cleaner directly onto the iPhone.
- Do not use compressed air or submerge the phone in cleaning agents.
Apple warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can further diminish the fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and may scratch the phone. The coating also wears over time with normal use.

Why can the finish look different after cleaning?
Apple notes that material transferred from objects such as denim can resemble a scratch and may be removable in most cases. On iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max, skin oil can temporarily change the appearance or color of the outside band; Apple says a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth restores its original look. Apple’s support page lists the models covered by its material and finish notes; check that page for its current model list.
