On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Software update > Download and install. If an update is available for your model and carrier, download it and follow the on-screen prompts. Menu labels and update availability can vary by device, software version, carrier, and region.
Install an update from your Galaxy phone

Connect to a reliable network. Samsung recommends Wi-Fi and sufficient battery before starting; some carriers require Wi-Fi to check for or install updates.

Open Settings, then tap Software update. Depending on the phone, the menu may be called System updates, or appear under About device.

Tap Download and install, or the check-for-updates control shown on your phone. Its label may instead be Check for system updates, Check for software updates, or Download now.

If an update is offered, download it and follow the prompts. Choose Install now or the equivalent option when prompted. The phone may restart, and you may need to check again to install a later update in a sequence.
To check which software is installed, go to Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung says this page includes the One UI version. If your phone offers an auto-download setting in the Software update menu, you can enable it to download updates over Wi-Fi. Samsung’s update instructions note that available settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless service provider.
Why a One UI update may not appear
An empty update check does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Samsung releases updates according to device and rollout availability, so Galaxy phones do not all receive the same One UI version at the same time. Carrier-locked models may receive an update later than unlocked phones because releases can go through carrier review and customization; availability also varies by model and network. Samsung Canada explains these rollout differences.

Connect to Wi-Fi if your carrier requires it for updates.

If the phone is SIM-unlocked, Samsung notes that it may need a SIM from the original carrier to receive an update.

If a release has only recently begun rolling out, wait and check again later; distribution can happen in waves.

If you have access to a Windows PC or Mac, check whether Smart Switch offers an update for the connected phone.
Do not try to install a version just because it is available for another Galaxy model or region. The release must be offered for your particular device and carrier.
Use Smart Switch on a computer
Smart Switch is Samsung’s computer-based alternative. It requires a Windows PC or Mac, the Smart Switch program, and a USB data connection to the phone. Use a compatible cable, such as the one supplied with the phone.

Open Smart Switch on the computer and connect the Galaxy phone by USB.

If Smart Switch offers an update, choose Update and follow the prompts on the computer and phone.

Keep the USB cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes. The device will reboot.

If a download is interrupted, reconnect to a network and try again. For repeated download failures, Samsung recommends Smart Switch as an alternative. Its troubleshooting guidance also covers emergency recovery, which can involve a factory reset. A reset can erase stored data, so back up important files before taking any recovery step that resets the phone. See Samsung’s software-update failure guidance.
Before you start installing
Plan to leave the phone alone while installation runs. Samsung warns that the device may be unusable during the update, files may be inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—cannot be made during that period. Start when you do not need the phone.
