Start with Stability around 50, Similarity around 75, Style Exaggeration at 0 and Speed at 1.0. Then test one control at a time on the same passage. ElevenLabs has no official universal best combination. The right values depend on the voice, the source audio, the text and the performance you want. This guide explains what each slider does and how to compare settings so you can tune by ear.

The starting recipe

Control Starting value Why
Stability About 50 ElevenLabs’ Studio documentation lists stability around 50 as a common setting.
Similarity About 75 The same documentation lists similarity near 75 as common.
Style Exaggeration 0 The documentation recommends keeping it at 0.
Speed 1.0 This is the default pace.
Speaker Boost Test on and off The audible difference is generally subtle, and it adds latency.

These are starting points. The Studio documentation says workflows differ and that the original voice and intended performance matter. It also describes the model as non-deterministic, so the same settings can produce different takes.

What each control changes

Stability

Stability sets the balance between consistency and randomness across generations. Lower values give a wider emotional range but can sound erratic. Higher values are steadier but can turn monotonous. For conversational voices, ElevenLabs suggests 0.30–0.50 for dynamic delivery and 0.60–0.85 for consistency. These are suggested ranges, not validated targets.

Similarity (Clarity + Similarity Enhancement)

This control sets how closely the output follows the source voice. Higher values can improve clarity and consistency. Very high values may cause distortion. If the source recording has artifacts or background noise, high similarity may reproduce them. See the voice settings reference.

Style Exaggeration

Style amplifies the original speaker’s style. It can reduce stability and add latency. In some cases it causes inconsistent speed, mispronunciation or extra sounds. The Studio documentation says: “In general, we recommend keeping this setting at 0 at all times.” Raise it only for a deliberately stylized read, and only while the result stays clean.

Speaker Boost

Speaker Boost increases similarity to the original speaker. It can raise computational load and latency. Keep it only if it audibly helps with your voice and text.

Speed

1.0 is the default. Below 1.0 slows speech and above 1.0 speeds it up. ElevenLabs suggests 0.9–1.1 for most natural conversations. Studio supports 0.7–1.2, and extreme values can affect quality. A voice may not sound natural across that whole band, so listen.

A repeatable tuning workflow

  1. Pick the right voice first. Voice choice and source quality shape results. Sliders will not fix a mismatched or poor voice.
  2. Enter the starting values from the table above.
  3. Choose a short test passage with the sentence types, pauses, names and numbers you actually need. Generate it more than once to see the natural variation between takes.
  4. Change one setting at a time and regenerate the same text. If delivery feels flat, lower Stability a little. If the voice wanders, raise it.
  5. Adjust Similarity. Keep it high enough to preserve the voice. Lower it if you hear noise, artifacts or distortion.
  6. Leave Style at 0. If you raised it and hear extra sounds, uneven pacing or mispronunciations, set it back to 0 and regenerate.
  7. Move Speed in small steps around 1.0.
  8. A/B test Speaker Boost on the same passage, weighing any benefit against latency.
  9. In Studio, scope the change. Use an override on selected text when only one passage needs it. Change the voice’s settings when the whole project does. Regenerate the affected audio afterwards. The Help Center explains changing voice and settings across multiple paragraphs.
  10. Fix stubborn words outside the sliders. Use a pronunciation dictionary for names and acronyms. Write numbers and symbols the way they should be spoken.

How to judge two settings fairly

Score each take on the same criteria:

  • Naturalness of pacing
  • Emotional variation versus consistency
  • Fidelity to the chosen voice
  • Audible artifacts or unwanted sounds
  • Pronunciation accuracy
  • Latency, if Speaker Boost or nonzero Style is on

ElevenLabs publishes no controlled scorecard for these. Your own listening on your own text is the real test.

When sliders are not the problem

The troubleshooting guide recommends splitting long text into sections under 800 characters to reduce audio degradation in long generations. For cloned voices, use consistent, clean training audio. Microphone distance, background noise and abrupt changes in delivery can all affect consistency.
