For similarly priced, unlocked Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 phones in comparable condition, the Pixel 7 is the better default buy: it is lighter and more compact, uses the newer Tensor G2 chip, and has roughly a year more of Google’s update window remaining. The Pixel 6 can make more sense if it costs substantially less and the specific handset passes checks for battery, screen, cameras, carrier compatibility, and seller protections. No current used-price comparison is established here, so the right choice depends on the listings in your market.

Pixel 6 vs. Pixel 7: What changes?

Google’s published specifications show two phones with similar core hardware: both have 8 GB of RAM, OLED displays with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, and 50 MP wide plus 12 MP ultrawide rear cameras. The differences most likely to matter when buying used are the Pixel 7’s newer processor generation, smaller and lighter body, front-camera specification, and later start to its update window.

Specifications are from Google; storage options and network features can vary by region and model variant. The battery capacities are typical manufacturer figures, not measurements of the battery in a particular used phone. Likewise, megapixel counts and the listed zoom range do not by themselves establish which phone takes better photos, and the different Tensor generations are not a quantified speed or battery-life comparison.

Is the Pixel 7 worth paying more for?

It can be, if the price difference is modest and the two listings are otherwise comparable. You get a 10 g lighter phone with a 0.1-inch smaller display, Tensor G2 instead of the first-generation Tensor, and a front camera with a higher listed resolution. Its later launch also means it began Google’s five-year update window about a year later than the Pixel 6.

Google Pixel 6 5G, 128GB, Stormy Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 6 powered by Google’s first-generation Tensor processor, enabling advanced on-device AI features such as more natural voice typing, quick language translation, and improved image processing without relying heavily on cloud services.

Those differences do not establish a universal amount the Pixel 7 is worth paying. Compare the total delivered price at the same storage capacity and similar condition, including any shipping or other charges. A well-kept Pixel 6 with a clear return option may be a better purchase than a damaged or uncertain Pixel 7.

How long will Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 get updates?

Google’s current policy says both models receive five years of operating-system and security updates, counted from when each first became available on the Google Store in the US. Because the Pixel 7 became available about a year after the Pixel 6, its support window started later. The policy establishes the duration and starting point; it does not, by itself, state exact final support dates.

Update rollouts may be gradual and can depend on the device and carrier. Before buying, check the phone’s Android version and security update level in Settings, and confirm Google’s current update policy for your model and region. A seller’s claim that a phone is “up to date” is not a substitute for checking its installed patch level.

How to check a used Pixel before buying

A model’s published capacity or specification cannot tell you whether an individual used phone is healthy. Ask the seller for clear answers and, where possible, test the device during the return period.

Google Pixel 6 5G, 256GB, Stormy Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 6 powered by Google’s first-generation Tensor processor, enabling advanced on-device AI features such as more natural voice typing, quick language translation, and improved image processing without relying heavily on cloud services.
  • Confirm the exact model, storage, and network variant. Compare the listing with the phone’s settings and verify that its network features and bands suit your country and carrier.
  • Verify unlock status. Ask whether the phone is carrier-unlocked and confirm compatibility with the carrier you intend to use. Do not assume that a listing described as “compatible” is unlocked.
  • Inspect the screen and frame. Look for cracks, deep marks, unusual discoloration, and display behavior that may signal damage. Check the frame for bends or signs of a hard impact.
  • Test charging and basic operation. Connect a charger and confirm charging is reliable. Check that the display responds normally and that the cameras open and focus.
  • Ask about battery behavior and repairs. The listed mAh figure is the phone’s typical battery capacity when new, not a health report for the used unit. Ask whether the battery or screen has been replaced and whether the seller can document the repair.
  • Read the return and warranty terms before paying. Prefer a clear return window and written protections, especially if the seller cannot demonstrate the phone’s condition in person.

If possible, complete these checks yourself before the return window closes. A seller who will not establish unlock status, explain repairs, or offer a way to address undisclosed faults adds meaningful risk to a used-phone purchase.

Which one should you buy?

Choose Pixel 7 if

  • The price gap is modest and both phones are in similar condition.
  • You prefer a lighter, slightly smaller phone and want the newer Tensor generation.
  • You value the later start to Google’s update window.

Choose Pixel 6 if

  • It is clearly cheaper than a comparable Pixel 7 listing.
  • Its screen, charging, cameras, and battery behavior check out, and the seller’s return terms are acceptable.
  • It works with your carrier and its remaining update window meets your needs.

Skip the listing if

  • The seller cannot establish unlock status or carrier compatibility.
  • The screen or frame is damaged, charging is unreliable, or battery condition is unclear and there is no meaningful return option.
  • The price is close to an alternative listing with better condition or stronger protections.
