Before installing a major Android update on a Pixel 6, confirm two separate backups: the device backup in Settings and the photo-and-video backup in Google Photos. Check that both have finished, and make sure your Google Account has enough storage. A backup reduces the risk of losing data, but it does not guarantee that every app’s private data can be restored or that you can roll back the update.
What to check before you start
- Reliable internet: Google recommends a good connection for Google Photos backup.
- Google Account storage: Photos, Drive, and Gmail share the account’s storage. If it is full, Google lists clearing space or buying more storage as options.
- Time: Google says a device backup can take up to 24 hours, so start well before the update.
Google’s guidance is for Pixel and Android devices generally, not a Pixel 6-specific update bulletin. Settings and app labels may vary slightly by Android or app version.
Back up device data and settings
- On your Pixel 6, open Settings.
- Tap Google services, then Backup.
- Review Backup details to see which data and apps are included.
- Run or confirm the device backup from that screen, then check its status rather than assuming that enabling backup means it has completed.

Confirm photos and videos in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and confirm that the intended Google Account is selected.
- Check that backup is enabled.
- Review the backup status at the top of the library and wait until it says “Backup complete.”
- If needed, use Google Photos to back up selected photos and videos manually.
A completed device backup does not confirm that your photos and videos have uploaded. Google Photos has its own backup status and uses the same Google Account storage shared with Drive and Gmail. See Google Photos backup instructions.

Do a final check before installing the update
- Return to Settings > Google services > Backup and confirm the device backup is current and complete.
- In Google Photos, confirm the status is “Backup complete.”
- Resolve any paused or incomplete backup, or any insufficient-storage warning, before proceeding.
What a backup does not guarantee
Google says not all apps can be backed up or restored. Some app data, settings, and messages are restored only during device setup, so a backup is not a guarantee that every app’s private data will return. Google also says that backup data can be removed if the device is not used for 57 days, except photos and videos backed up to Google Photos.
Android restoration also depends on the Android version: Google says a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. Do not treat a pre-update backup as a promise that you can downgrade or undo the update. Google says uploaded data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and that some backup data receives additional protection with the device screen lock; this does not mean every category has identical end-to-end encryption.
