Yes—offline AI transcription can use an external microphone and transcribe different languages, provided the computer and app select that microphone, the chosen engine processes audio locally, and its downloaded model supports the language. “AI transcription” alone does not mean offline: some apps offer both local and cloud processing, and required models may need to be downloaded before you disconnect.
What determines whether offline transcription works?
- Microphone input: Your computer must recognize the external mic, and the transcription feature must use it. Some apps have a separate microphone selector in addition to the operating system’s input setting.
- Processing mode: Choose an on-device engine. If the app sends audio to a cloud service, that transcription is not offline. Check whether the app requires an internet connection and download any needed model or language resource while connected.
- Language support: The specific local engine must support the language you want. Language lists and automatic detection vary by product; a language count does not establish equal accuracy across languages.
Set up an external microphone
- Connect the mic and confirm the computer sees it. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > Input and select the external microphone. Microsoft recommends checking that an external microphone is connected and that the intended input device is selected when voice typing is not working: Microsoft’s Windows voice-typing troubleshooting.
- For Mac Dictation, choose the microphone source. Apple’s instructions are in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation; select the microphone source there. Apple also advises checking Dictation settings to determine whether an internet connection is required: Apple: Dictate messages and documents on Mac.
- Check the transcription app’s own input setting. If it offers microphone selection, choose the external mic there too. TypeWhisper’s documentation describes microphone selection and a live preview, alongside its engine and language controls: TypeWhisper documentation.
- Allow microphone access and check the input level. On Windows, microphone privacy access and input level are among Microsoft’s troubleshooting checks. A computer can detect a mic without receiving a useful speech signal.
Choose a local engine and language
Before going offline, confirm that the app is using a local engine rather than a cloud option, and download any model or language resources it needs. Then select the target language if the app requires manual selection. Automatic language detection is available in some products, but it is not universal.
Language support is product-specific. Whisper Notes’ current App Store listing advertises offline local engines and support for over 100 languages; that is the vendor’s capability claim, not an independent accuracy result: Whisper Notes on the App Store. Audacity says its Whisper translation feature handles 99 source languages: Audacity features. That figure concerns source languages for translation, not a claim that every language is equally accurate or that every Audacity transcription workflow supports them in the same way. Apple notes that Dictation language and feature availability vary.
Test the exact microphone-and-language combination
Run a short sample with the external microphone and each language you plan to use. Verify that the app receives the mic signal, that transcription works with the device disconnected from the internet, and that the selected language is recognized as intended. This practical check helps catch a wrong input, missing permission, unselected language, or undownloaded model before a longer recording.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Product documentation establishes that microphone selection, local engines, and multilingual options exist in some tools. It does not establish a microphone or language accuracy winner. The cited sources provide no controlled, comparable accuracy benchmark across microphones and languages, so vendor-published language counts should not be treated as error rates or proof of recognition quality.
An external microphone is optional, not a general requirement. It may be useful if you need a different input source, but the cited guidance does not show that a particular microphone improves transcription accuracy or works with every computer and app.
