Start by checking Settings > Storage on your Pixel 6, then remove only files or downloads you recognize and no longer need. Check backup status before deleting photos, and prefer clearing an app’s cache over clearing its storage. Google does not specify a universal amount of free space required for a Pixel 6 Android update, so recheck storage and try the update rather than relying on a fixed target.
1. Check what is using local storage
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Review the categories and identify what is taking up the most room before deleting anything.
- Tap Free up space, if available, and review the suggested items. Select only items you recognize and no longer need. If the option or a category is missing, use Browse where available.
This screen shows data stored on the phone. It is different from Google Account storage, which is a shared cloud quota for services such as Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. Google says an account includes up to 15 GB of shared storage; freeing that quota does not by itself free space on the Pixel 6.
Menu names and available steps can vary with Android version. Google notes that some Pixel cleanup steps apply only to Android 11 and later.
2. Remove files and downloads you no longer need
Review downloads and large files
Open the Files app and inspect Downloads and other folders for files you can remove. If sorting by size or date is available, use it to find large or old items, then select only files you recognize. Google’s Pixel file guidance notes that some file-management steps require Android 14 or later.

Transfer wanted files before removing phone copies
If you want to keep a document, video or other personal file but do not need it on the phone, copy it to a computer over USB first. Use a data-capable USB-C cable, wait for the transfer to finish, and open the copied file on the computer to verify it. Delete the phone copy only if you are satisfied the computer copy is usable. In Files, selected items can be moved to Trash; check the screen before confirming so you know what is being removed.
Remove offline media in the app that saved it
For music, video, maps or other content saved for offline use, remove downloads inside the app that downloaded them. This targets the app’s offline copy without guessing which folder owns the file.

3. Clean up apps without erasing their data by mistake
Uninstall apps you no longer use
Uninstall apps you do not need and can reinstall later. Local data may differ between apps, so check the app first if you are unsure whether something important is stored only on the phone.
Clear cache before considering Clear storage
Where Android offers the options, open Settings > Apps, choose the app, then open its storage settings. Clear cache removes temporary files; the app may load more slowly the next time while it rebuilds them. Clear storage permanently deletes all app data, which can include local settings, files or sign-in state. Use it only when you understand what that app stores and are prepared to set it up again. If practical, check for a cleanup or download-management option inside the app first.

4. Check photo backup before deleting device copies
In Google Photos, confirm that backup has completed before removing any local photo or video copies. When the Pixel is online, backed-up items can be viewed in Google Photos. Use the app’s device-copy removal option when your intent is to remove copies from the phone; do not treat a general delete action as a guarantee that only the device copy will be affected.
Google Photos backup quality concerns the cloud copy, not whether the phone copy is removed. Google says Original quality retains captured resolution and counts toward Google Account storage. Storage saver compresses some photos and videos and may resize them. Changing backup quality does not itself free local phone storage, and Google says the quality cannot be changed if the account storage is already full. 5. Recheck storage, then install the update
- Return to Settings > Storage and check the available space.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 75%.
- Open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart the phone when prompted. Pixel updates downloaded and installed in the background become active after a restart.
Google says updates can be large and take time. If an update fails to download, the phone may retry automatically over the following days. Update availability can vary by device, manufacturer and mobile operator, and older devices may not support newer Android versions. Google’s update guidance does not state a fixed free-space minimum for a Pixel 6 update, so no particular amount freed can guarantee installation.
How much space should you try to free?
Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available. That is general troubleshooting advice, not a stated minimum for installing an Android update. Use it as a reason to inspect a nearly full phone, not as an update requirement or guarantee. The cleanup steps above have no published fixed space-savings amounts; what they recover depends on the files and apps on your device.
