Pick Elden Ring if you want an action RPG built around exploration, dungeons, boss battles and the satisfaction of beating hard challenges. The quickest tiebreaker is combat: do you want to plan each turn, or react in real time?
The core difference: turn-based tactics versus action combat
Larian Studios describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as “an expansive, cinematic, player-driven RPG based on 5e D&D.” That means combat follows Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition rules in a turn-based format, so you stop, plan and then act. Larian also lists three difficulty settings and weighted dice options to adjust how much challenge you face.
Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring site presents the game as an action RPG. Its description emphasizes vast fields, dungeons and overcoming obstacles, and the publisher treats boss battles as a core part of the experience. Fights are about how you handle enemies in action, not about queuing up turns.
Since you will spend dozens of hours inside one of these systems, this is the most useful question to answer before anything else. If turn-based planning sounds tedious, BG3 will feel slow. If action combat sounds stressful, Elden Ring’s central loop will wear on you.

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if…
- You enjoy tactical, turn-based encounters where you can think before acting.
- You like building a party and getting to know its members.
- Dialogue and explicit decisions are what you want to drive the experience.
- You want to tune the challenge. BG3 gives you a visible difficulty choice up front.
- You are new to the series. Larian’s FAQ says you do not need to have played Baldur’s Gate 1 or 2 to follow the new story. You also don’t need tabletop D&D books to play, even though the rules are 5e-based.
Choose Elden Ring if…
- You want to be dropped into a dark fantasy world and find your own way through it.
- You enjoy discovering dungeons and hard enemies rather than being guided by conversation.
- Overcoming a tough boss is the kind of reward you play for.
- You prefer action combat to planned turns.
Larian’s difficulty options are documented for BG3. Elden Ring’s current settings weren’t established here, so don’t assume it has no accessibility or challenge options. Check its official page or your platform’s store listing.
If you mainly want to play with friends
BG3’s campaign is described by Larian as playable online with up to four players. Elden Ring does have online modes, but Bandai Namco’s page separates online play (up to three) from Arenas (up to six). The headcounts don’t make the experiences equivalent. Decide whether you want to share a story campaign or a different kind of online interaction, then check that specific feature.

Check the edition before you buy
Elden Ring
Bandai Namco lists a base game, expansion bundles and a Switch 2 Tarnished Edition. Shadow of the Erdtree requires the base game, so make sure a listing is not DLC alone if you don’t already own Elden Ring. The US Bandai Namco store showed standard PS4, PS5 and Xbox editions plus expansion editions when it was checked, but stock and prices there change.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian lists standard, digital deluxe and physical deluxe options. Its FAQ includes some platform text dated 2023, so treat it as incomplete and confirm availability for your console or PC store before purchasing.

A note on popularity
A 2024 Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware document reports more than 23 million Elden Ring units shipped worldwide. That is a historical figure, not a current sales count, and no comparable BG3 number was found, so sales don’t settle this choice.
