Choose international connectivity by checking your exact destination, carrier plan, phone compatibility, expected use, and whether you need to keep your usual number. First find out what your plan already covers; then compare its roaming terms with a travel pass, pay-per-use rates, a local SIM or eSIM, and Wi-Fi-based options. Do not assume a domestic unlimited plan includes roaming abroad: the FCC advises travelers to check rates and rules before departure.
Start with your destination, plan, and phone
Roaming availability and charges depend on the country, carrier, plan, and services you use. Before comparing alternatives, ask your carrier about the exact destination and your account. Check whether voice, text, and data are included, whether an allowance or speed restriction applies, and what happens when it is used up. The FCC’s wireless travel guidance recommends checking rates and compatibility before traveling.
Confirm that your specific phone model supports the destination’s network and the services you need. If you plan to use a different provider’s SIM or eSIM, check that the phone is unlocked and compatible. Apple’s iPhone travel eSIM guidance explains how to check carrier lock and use an eSIM while traveling.
Compare the options against your needs
| Option | Often fits when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Roaming included in your home plan | Your current plan covers the destination and the amount of voice, text, and data you expect to use. | Covered countries, allowances, speed restrictions, and what happens after an allowance is reached. |
| Carrier travel pass | You want to keep your usual number and prefer a predictable, activation-based charge. | What triggers the charge, how long it lasts, destination coverage, line-by-line pricing, allowances, and fallback rates. |
| Pay-per-use roaming | You expect very limited use and have checked and accepted the destination’s rates. | Per-minute, per-message, and per-data charges; background data and voicemail may also matter. |
| Local SIM or travel eSIM | You have a compatible, unlocked phone and mainly need local service or data. | Compatibility, coverage, validity, top-ups, whether voice and texts are included, and how you will retain access to your usual number. |
| Wi-Fi or hotspot | You can plan around available Wi-Fi or a shared connection. | Availability away from lodging, reliability and security needs, hotspot data terms, and whether you still need mobile calls or texts. |
| Rented handset or hotspot | A separate device or shared connection suits the itinerary. | Rental cost, pickup and return logistics, coverage, included data, and how others will contact you. |
Work out the total cost—not just the headline price
Compare the expected cost for the whole trip and the use that triggers a charge. A daily pass can be convenient, but its destination list, activation rules, additional-line pricing, and treatment of calls to other countries matter. Pay-per-use can be costly if data runs in the background. A local SIM or eSIM may be a poor fit if you need your regular number for calls or texts.

- AT&T International Day Pass: AT&T’s support page, updated March 2, 2026, lists $12 per 24-hour period for one line on land or air and $6 for each additional line on the same account on the same calendar day. The page describes included destinations in more than 210 locations; check whether your destination and plan qualify. Calls to other destinations can incur international long-distance charges, and destinations outside the pass are billed at pay-per-use rates. See AT&T’s current terms.
- Google Fi Flexible: Google Fi’s current support page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists $10 per GB in more than 200 destinations, $0.20 per minute for calls outside the U.S., and unlimited texts for the Flexible plan. International features differ by plan and device; the page says Unlimited Essentials does not support international data, calls, and texts. Check Google Fi’s international-service details.
- Verizon TravelPass: Verizon’s FAQ says calls within the visited country and to the U.S. are included under TravelPass rules, while calls to a different country and Wi-Fi calls to non-U.S. numbers can be billed at international long-distance rates. Check the current rules for your itinerary. Read Verizon’s TravelPass FAQs.
Choose based on whether you need your regular number
If keeping your usual number matters
A roaming plan or pass may be the simplest fit when you need your regular number for calls and texts. Verify which incoming and outgoing calls, texts, and data are covered, and whether a pass activates when you use a particular service. Do not assume that receiving a call, using voicemail, or making a call to a third country is covered on the same terms as calling the U.S.

If data is the main requirement
A local SIM or travel eSIM can provide connectivity through another provider, if your phone is unlocked and compatible. Check the provider’s coverage, validity period, top-up rules, and whether the plan is data-only. If you need to keep your home number active for calls or texts, understand how your phone and carrier handle that line abroad before relying on a second SIM.
If you can rely on Wi-Fi or shared access
Wi-Fi can reduce cellular data use where a reliable network is available, but it does not provide mobile coverage away from that network. A hotspot can share connectivity with several devices, but it does not automatically replace ordinary mobile calling or SMS. A rented handset or hotspot may help when a separate device suits your itinerary; include coverage, data limits, and collection and return logistics in the comparison.

Prepare your phone to avoid surprise charges
- Ask your carrier about the exact trip. Confirm destination coverage, your plan’s voice, text, and data terms, charges that trigger a pass, and pay-per-use rates if the pass does not apply.
- Check your phone and SIM choice. Confirm that the model supports the destination’s network. For another provider’s SIM or eSIM, check that the phone is unlocked and that the provider supports the device and destination.
- Review cellular settings and background use. Limit automatic downloads and background activity if they could incur charges. If avoiding cellular use, AT&T advises using airplane mode with Wi-Fi; confirm the settings you need before relying on them abroad. See AT&T’s guidance on managing international usage.
- Decide which line handles calls and texts. Keep your home line enabled only if you understand its roaming behavior and charges. If using Wi-Fi calling, check how your carrier bills calls to U.S. and non-U.S. numbers from abroad. AT&T says calls from abroad to U.S. numbers are at no additional charge under the cited guidance, while calls to other international numbers depend on the roaming add-on. Read AT&T’s Wi-Fi calling terms.
- Plan for emergencies. Check local emergency numbers and the capabilities available where you are going. Do not assume internet calling offers all the emergency features of ordinary mobile service.
Make the choice before departure
For a trip where keeping your regular number and predictable activation-based charges matter, compare your carrier’s pass with its included roaming and pay-per-use rates. For a data-focused trip, compare a compatible local SIM or eSIM with the cost and coverage of roaming. If you expect very little cellular use, pay-per-use may be acceptable only after you have checked the rates and considered background activity. In every case, verify the destination-specific terms and device compatibility rather than relying on a domestic “unlimited” label.
