Apple’s drawing tools and a dedicated handwriting notebook are not interchangeable. The former can be enough for a quick diagram or annotation; the latter is a better match when notebooks, handwriting search, or extensive PDF markup are central to the work.
What does “handwriting” mean on your Mac?
Drawing and annotating within a note
Apple’s Notes User Guide explains how to use the Markup palette to draw freehand, add shapes and lines, or place text boxes in a note. This makes Apple Notes a practical starting point for sketches and visual annotations without requiring a notebook-based workflow.
Building a handwriting-first notebook
Goodnotes and Notability describe more specialized handwriting tools, including handwriting recognition or conversion and PDF annotation. Goodnotes additionally offers separate notebook and whiteboard workspaces; Notability describes keeping work in one note format. Consider whether you want a notebook structure, an open-ended canvas, or a straightforward note that can include text, drawing, and documents.

How much does audio need to connect to the note?
Recording while taking notes
Apple documents recording audio directly in a note and continuing to edit the note during the recording. Its guide explains that transcripts are searchable and that selecting transcript text plays the associated point in the audio: Record and transcribe audio in Notes on Mac.
Revisiting the moment behind a handwritten mark
Goodnotes describes notes synced to audio. Notability’s vendor-described Note Replay goes further in its interaction: tapping a handwritten note, sketch, or image revisits the corresponding point in a recording. If that connection is important—for example, to review a lecture or interview—compare how each app’s current Mac version handles it before moving an established workflow.

Check Apple Notes transcription eligibility
Recording audio and getting a searchable transcript are separate considerations. Apple says Notes transcription requires a Mac with M1 or later and the device language set to a supported option: English localized for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, or the US; Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, or Traditional Chinese. How do the workspaces and plans compare?
Workspaces
Goodnotes describes three formats: notebooks for handwriting, whiteboards for infinite-canvas sketching, and text documents. Notability describes a single note format with drawing, text boxes, and document annotation tools. This distinction matters if you want a dedicated visual canvas as well as conventional notes.

How to make the choice for your own Mac
- Start with the core task. For occasional diagrams and audio in ordinary notes, try Apple Notes. For regular handwriting, notebooks, and PDF markup, compare Goodnotes and Notability.
- Decide whether audio needs to be searchable or linked to marks. If transcript search is enough, Apple Notes may fit if your Mac and device language meet Apple’s requirements. If you want to revisit audio from a handwritten mark, evaluate the audio-linking features Goodnotes and Notability describe.
- Choose the visual structure. Pick a separate notebook and infinite whiteboard option if both are useful; otherwise, a single note format may be simpler.
- Check practical constraints before migrating. Verify the app’s current Mac compatibility, local plan price, audio and transcript limits, backup and sync options, PDF behavior, organization tools, accessibility, and language support. Apple’s documentation describes its Notes features and transcription requirements. These sources explain advertised capabilities, but do not establish independently tested Mac-by-Mac performance or complete feature parity across Mac, iPad, and other platforms.
