Before using your phone abroad, confirm your carrier’s coverage and charges, then set the right cellular-data line and Data Roaming option for your plan. There is no universally safe roaming toggle: the right setup depends on your carrier, destination, SIM arrangement, and whether you need calls and texts as well as data.
Check your carrier plan before changing settings
Contact your carrier before departure to confirm that service works at your destination and that international roaming is enabled on your account if required. Ask for the current rates or package terms for mobile data, calls, texts, and voicemail, plus any usage caps or speed reductions. Domestic “unlimited” service does not by itself mean that foreign use is included; foreign networks and services may be billed differently. The FCC advises travelers to understand the rules and rates before leaving: Tip Sheet: Wireless World Travel Made Simple.
Apple likewise recommends contacting your carrier to compare international roaming plans before travel: About cellular data roaming options for your iPhone and iPad. Check the destination and your specific plan rather than relying on a general price estimate.
Which phone settings should you change before international roaming?
Identify the line that will use cellular data
If your phone has more than one SIM or eSIM, identify the home line and the line selected for cellular data. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and review the lines and data selection. Menu names and layout can vary by region, iOS version, and SIM setup. Roaming settings may be controlled separately for each line, so do not assume a single switch applies to both.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Set Data Roaming for the plan you intend to use
On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options, select the relevant line if prompted, and review Data Roaming. Turn it on only when that line’s carrier and plan require it for service abroad. If the carrier does not support roaming or you do not want that line using cellular data abroad, leave it off. Follow the carrier’s instructions for each SIM; there is no single safe configuration for every dual-SIM combination.
Data Roaming allows cellular data when your phone is outside your carrier’s own coverage. Apple’s instructions for managing the setting are in its iPhone and iPad cellular data roaming guidance.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Choose airplane mode if you want to prevent cellular network use
To avoid connecting to a cellular network, enable Airplane Mode before departure or before crossing a border. You can manually turn Wi-Fi back on for Wi-Fi services where permitted. Cellular calls and standard texts will not work while the phone is disconnected from cellular service, so this choice is unsuitable if you need those services. The Government of Canada describes this approach in its telecommunications advice for travellers.
Check Wi-Fi Calling rather than assuming it is free
Wi-Fi Calling billing and availability depend on the carrier and plan. Ask your carrier how calls and texts made over Wi-Fi are treated at your destination. AT&T, for example, gives travelers specific circumstances in which it recommends airplane mode with Wi-Fi and turning Wi-Fi Calling off to avoid unintended charges. That is carrier-specific advice, not a universal setting; follow your own provider’s instructions. See AT&T’s international travel guidance.

Choose how you will connect abroad
Compare the options against your destination, expected use, and need to keep your usual number available. The sources establish these as possible approaches, but not which will cost least for a particular trip.
| Option | What to check |
|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Destination coverage, account activation, charges or package terms for data, calls, texts, and voicemail, and any usage limits. |
| Local physical SIM | Whether the phone is unlocked and compatible with the local network; what voice, text, and data service the SIM includes. |
| Travel eSIM | Whether the phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, the eSIM’s destination coverage and data allowance, and how calls and texts work. Confirm which line is selected for data and whether the home line can incur roaming charges. |
A local SIM or travel eSIM may suit a trip, but check compatibility and unlock status before purchasing. If you keep the home line active while using another line for data, ask both providers which settings and billing rules apply. The U.S. State Department’s telephones and communications guidance also recommends saving important numbers and downloading messaging apps before travel.

What to check after you arrive
- Confirm that the intended SIM or eSIM is selected for cellular data.
- Enable Data Roaming on that line only if the carrier’s instructions and plan call for it.
- Check the home line’s roaming settings if another SIM or eSIM is providing data.
- Monitor use against your plan’s limits. Depending on the plan, reaching an international data allowance may exhaust included data or reduce speeds.
If an iPhone has no service, Apple suggests checking the applicable roaming setting, turning Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and then off, and allowing automatic network selection. These steps may help but cannot guarantee service; see Apple’s roaming and cellular-data guidance.

On some aircraft or ships, a phone may connect to a non-terrestrial network with separate charges. Airplane Mode or disabling roaming can prevent that connection; ask your carrier how charges apply before relying on onboard connectivity.

European roaming arrangements apply within defined geographic areas and subject to their conditions. Do not assume those protections cover every European destination, or extend to networks on ships and aircraft. Check the current scope and conditions with your carrier and the relevant official guidance: EU mobile roaming rules.
Prepare useful offline access
Before leaving, save important contacts and local emergency numbers, and download maps or other information you may need without a connection. This is useful if roaming is unavailable, deliberately disabled, or interrupted.
