You can record audio on a Mac without using an online recording service: use Voice Memos for a simple recording, or QuickTime Player when you want to choose the microphone, quality, and save location. Recording offline does not automatically turn off syncing. Apple says Voice Memos recordings can be available on other devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so check your sync and sharing settings if local-only access matters.
How do I record audio offline on my Mac?
Both Voice Memos and QuickTime Player provide built-in audio recording workflows that do not require an internet-connected recording service. Choose Voice Memos for a quick start; choose QuickTime when you need more control over input, recording quality, and where the file is saved.
Record with Voice Memos
- Open Voice Memos on your Mac.
- Choose the built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone as your input.
- Click Record. Pause or resume as needed, then click Done to save the recording.
Voice Memos also supports editing, including trimming a recording or replacing part of it. See Apple’s Voice Memos guide to creating a recording on Mac.
Record with QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Audio Recording.
- Click the recording options menu to select an available microphone and a quality setting.
- Click the Start Recording control. To pause, Option-click that control; click it again to resume.
- When finished, choose File > Save, then enter a name and choose where to save the file.
Apple documents these controls in its QuickTime Player audio recording guide.

Which Mac recording app should I choose?
| Need | Voice Memos | QuickTime Player |
|---|---|---|
| Start a basic recording | Simple start, pause or resume, and Done workflow. | Start from File > New Audio Recording. |
| Choose a microphone | Supports the built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone. | Choose from microphones available in the recording options. |
| Choose recording quality | Quality choices not stated in Apple’s cited guide. | High or Maximum; see the settings below. |
| Choose an explicit save location | Save-location choice not stated in Apple’s cited guide. | Choose a location through File > Save. |

What quality settings does QuickTime offer?
Apple lists two choices in QuickTime Player:
- High: 44,100 Hz AAC.
- Maximum: 44,100 Hz uncompressed Linear PCM, 24-bit AIFF-C. Apple notes that maximum-quality recordings can use large amounts of storage.
These are QuickTime recording specifications, not a guarantee about how a particular recording will sound; the microphone and recording conditions also matter.
How do I keep Mac recordings private?
Privacy depends on more than whether the recording itself was made offline. Review microphone access, system-audio permissions, the destination folder, and any account or service syncing that could make the file available elsewhere.

Review microphone access
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Review the listed apps and turn microphone access on or off for each. Control Center’s Recording Indicator shows when the Mac microphone is in use or was used recently, according to Apple’s microphone privacy guide.
Review system-audio access separately
Apps that capture system audio use a separate permission area: Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Apple advises checking third-party apps’ or websites’ terms and privacy policies before granting them audio-recording access. Details are in Apple’s screen and system audio recording guide.

Choose a private destination and check syncing
- For QuickTime, save the file in a location that is not shared with other users or services.
- For Voice Memos, account for Apple’s statement that recordings can be listened to on other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Check account and device synchronization settings if you need the recording to remain local.
- Avoid sharing or syncing the saved file unintentionally, and limit app permissions to those you need.
These steps reduce exposure, but Apple’s cited documentation does not certify that any particular Mac setup guarantees zero network transmission.
Can I record audio on a Mac without internet?
The documented Voice Memos and QuickTime workflows let you make an audio recording without depending on a cloud recording service. That is not the same as proving that every Mac configuration prevents network synchronization or other transmission. If local-only access is important, pay particular attention to where the file is saved and whether Voice Memos or the chosen destination is synchronized across devices or services.
