You can use a Fitbit without paying for a subscription: the free app supports basic tracking and insights. The paid membership—called Google Health Premium in Google’s help materials since May 19, 2026—adds selected deeper analysis, coaching, and content. Setting up a Fitbit still requires a compatible mobile device, the app, an internet connection, and a Google Account.
What you get without a subscription
Fitbit’s feature comparison lists activity, weight, sleep, and nutrition tracking, along with basic insights and introductory experiences, in the free app. That is enough for basic use; paying is not a prerequisite for tracking with a Fitbit.
Google’s 2026 help material refers to the paid membership as Google Health Premium, following the May 19, 2026 rename of Fitbit Premium. Some older Fitbit materials still use “Premium,” so the name you see may depend on the document or app information you are reading.
Free app vs. Google Health Premium
The following are examples from Fitbit’s published comparison chart, not a guarantee that every feature appears on every device or in every country. Google says availability can vary by device, country, and language, and features may change.

The 7-day and 90-day history figures and the content counts come from Fitbit’s comparison chart; they should not be treated as universal current limits or catalog sizes. Google notes that the Health Metrics dashboard is not available in all countries. Check the feature listing for your model and location before deciding whether a paid membership offers something you will use. Health metrics are for wellbeing information, not for diagnosing or treating medical conditions.
What you need to set up and use a Fitbit
A subscription is separate from device setup. Google’s current setup guidance calls for a compatible mobile device and a Google Account; you also need the Fitbit app and internet access. Google says Fitbit-account sign-in support ended after February 2, 2026, so setup now requires using a Google Account rather than relying on a legacy Fitbit account.

How to decide whether the paid membership is useful
Consider paying only if you want features beyond basic tracking. The comparison chart points to deeper trend analysis, a detailed sleep breakdown, readiness guidance, expanded workout and mindfulness content, longer health-metrics history, and a downloadable report as reasons someone might value the membership.
- If you mainly want activity, sleep, weight, or nutrition tracking and basic insights, start with the free app.
- If you want a specific paid feature, confirm it is offered for your Fitbit model and in your country and language.
- Do not assume buying a Fitbit device automatically includes every paid app feature.
