These controls can reduce exposure, but they do not selectively remove every ad shown inside a third-party app. The right step depends on where the ad appears: in Safari, as a pop-up, or inside an app.
Start with Screen Time to control app and website access
For a child in your Family group, open Settings > Family, select the child, then review Apps & Websites and Restrictions. Apple’s controls can limit app use, set age-rating limits, and filter websites. Exact labels and available features depend on the software version; Apple’s current guidance also identifies some features that require iOS or iPadOS 27. Check the child’s installed version before following a menu path. Apple’s guide to blocking or allowing apps and websites and its parental-controls setup guide explain the available options.
Limit apps that are not appropriate
Use app access and age-rating restrictions to reduce which apps a child can use or install. If a particular game displays unsuitable ads, blocking or removing that game may be more effective than changing a browser setting. Review the app’s age rating and any in-app controls as well.
Filter website access
Website filtering can limit detected adult websites or allow only approved websites, depending on the option available on the child’s device. This controls which destinations a child can visit; it does not promise to remove advertising from a website that remains accessible.

Use approval requests for new apps and websites
Where available, Ask to Buy can give a parent an approval point for eligible app downloads and purchases. Ask to Browse or approved-site access can add a review step for new website destinations. Availability, defaults, and age thresholds vary by country or region, so check the child’s Family settings rather than assuming the options work identically for every account. Apple describes these family controls in its parental-controls guide.
Block pop-up windows in Safari
If the unwanted content appears as a browser pop-up, open Settings > Apps > Safari and use Safari’s pop-up setting. This addresses pop-up windows, not every ad embedded in a web page or app. Apple warns that some pop-ups imitate trusted companies: “Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics such as warnings or prizes to trick you into believing they’re from Apple or another trusted company, so that you’ll share personal or financial information.” Don’t tap suspicious prize, warning, or fake-update prompts. Understand what Safari content blockers can and cannot do
Safari content blockers are extensions, not a Screen Time control. Apple’s developer documentation explains that a content blocker communicates rules to Safari, where they can affect page content. That scope does not establish that a blocker will remove ads inside games or other third-party apps. Learn more in Apple’s content-blocker documentation.

Some third-party products advertise Safari content filtering or DNS filtering, which can apply beyond a Safari page depending on how the product works. Coverage varies with the product and how an ad is delivered; the available product description does not establish universal ad blocking. For example, the App Store listing for AdGuard Ad Blocker for Safari describes Safari and DNS filtering, but a vendor listing is not independent evidence that it will catch every inappropriate ad. Check current features and availability before installing, and avoid treating any filter as a guarantee.

Choose the control that matches where the ad appears
