ChatGPT text watermarking and AI-writing detectors use different evidence. A watermark is a statistical signal embedded as a participating AI system generates text; a watermark detector checks for that signal. Most third-party AI-writing detectors instead inspect finished text for patterns associated with AI-generated writing. Neither method, on its own, proves who wrote a passage or why.
OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it was beginning an EU rollout of invisible text watermarks for eligible ChatGPT and Codex output over the following weeks. The rollout is not universal: OpenAI says select API customers globally can opt in, with watermarking off by default in the API. Access to OpenAI’s text detector is initially limited to approved researchers and expert organizations on a case-by-case basis. OpenAI’s provenance guidance and its EU text provenance announcement describe the current scope.
How watermarking differs from an AI-writing detector
| Approach | When it works | What it looks for | What a result can support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text watermark | During generation by a participating system that applies the watermark | A statistical signal embedded in the system’s token or word choices | Evidence that a compatible signal associated with a participating generator is present |
| AI-writing classifier | After text has been written or generated | Learned patterns in the submitted text, such as word choice | An estimate of whether the text resembles material labeled AI-generated |
OpenAI calls its text-watermarking approach textGrain. It is not hidden characters, invisible spaces, or unusual punctuation: the signal comes from statistically steering word choices during generation. A compatible detector tests for the expected signal. If a system did not embed it, a watermark-specific detector has no such signal to find. OpenAI’s announcement describes textGrain, while Google’s SynthID documentation explains a separate watermarking system.
A classifier works differently. It examines completed text and estimates whether its patterns resemble examples it has learned to label as AI-generated. OpenAI cites Pangram as an example of a third-party classifier-based detector. A classifier can assess text from systems that did not embed its watermark, but its output is still an inference that can vary by generator, task, genre, and platform. Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview discusses the distinction between watermarking and classifier-based detection.

Does ChatGPT watermark text?
Not every ChatGPT response can be assumed to carry a watermark. OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 announcement describes a phased EU rollout for eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output, plus an opt-in for select API customers globally; API watermarking is off by default. OpenAI also says detector access is initially restricted to approved researchers and expert organizations on a case-by-case basis. Availability may change as the rollout proceeds, so the announcement should not be read as a claim that all ChatGPT text everywhere is watermarked or that the detector is a public checker. See OpenAI’s rollout details.
How accurate are text watermarks and AI detectors?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to all watermarks, classifiers, writing tasks, or passages. Results depend on the system, the kind of text, its length, and how much it has been changed. Watermarks have a specific signal to test for, but only when a participating generator embedded that signal; classifiers have broader reach, but their conclusions are pattern-based estimates.

Watermark detection depends on length and genre
OpenAI reports that its watermark detector identified about 80% of 200-token psychology-like passages and about 95% of 400-token passages at a target false-positive rate of 1%. These are OpenAI’s own 2026 evaluation figures under those stated conditions, not universal accuracy guarantees. OpenAI reports substantially lower detection for mathematics, where there is less freedom to vary word choices without changing meaning. OpenAI’s announcement provides the evaluation context.
Google says SynthID detection is probabilistic and can return “watermarked,” “not watermarked,” or “uncertain.” It is less effective on factual responses, where changing token choices can risk accuracy. Thorough rewriting or translation can substantially reduce confidence, while cropping, changing a few words, or mild paraphrasing may leave more of the signal intact. Google’s SynthID documentation describes these limitations. Google DeepMind also notes that watermarks work best with longer, more varied outputs and less well with factual or highly constrained text. Its overview cautions that classifiers may perform inconsistently across content types and platforms.

Classifier performance varies by system and use
NIST’s 2025 text-to-text pilot found substantial variation among the generators and discriminators it evaluated: some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected nearly all evaluated generators. Both sides improved over testing rounds. NIST’s summary does not provide one headline percentage that can stand for all detectors; it calls for continued evaluation and standardized benchmarks. Read NIST’s evaluation overview and results.
What a positive or negative result actually means
A positive watermark result
A positive result supports the limited conclusion that the detector found a compatible signal associated with a participating generator. It does not identify the person who prompted or edited the text, establish intent, verify factual accuracy, or show whether the passage was later changed. OpenAI says its supported provenance results do not identify who created content or why. OpenAI’s provenance guidance explains the limits.

A negative watermark result
A negative result does not establish human authorship. The generator may not have applied that watermark; the passage may be too short or constrained for reliable detection; or later editing, rewriting, or translation may have weakened the signal. A watermark check answers whether its supported signal was detected, not whether AI was involved in any form.
A classifier score
A classifier score is an estimate based on patterns in the submitted text, not proof of authorship or misconduct. Its reliability depends on the particular detector, generator, task, and text. NIST’s observed variation and Google DeepMind’s warning about inconsistent performance across content types and platforms are reasons not to treat a score as a definitive verdict. NIST’s pilot overview and Google DeepMind’s overview discuss these limits.

Can a detector prove text was written by AI?
No. A watermark can provide evidence that a supported generation system’s signal is present, and a classifier can estimate whether text resembles AI-generated examples. Neither independently identifies an author or proves intent. If a result could affect a student, employee, or writer, do not use a detector score alone to accuse someone. Consider other evidence and provide a fair process, given the documented limits and varying performance of these tools.
How to compare a watermark detector with an AI-writing checker
Before relying on a tool, ask what its result covers rather than treating “AI detection” as one interchangeable capability.
Quick Recap
- Evidence: Does it test for an embedded signal, infer from learned text patterns, or combine methods?
- Systems covered: Which generators and versions are in scope? A watermark detector can test only for signals it supports; classifier behavior can vary across generators.
- Text evaluated: What passage lengths and genres were tested? OpenAI reports lower watermark detection on shorter passages and mathematics; Google notes weaker performance on factual text.
- Uncertainty and false positives: Does the tool provide an uncertain state? What false-positive conditions and evaluation setup are reported?
- Text changes: Could rewriting, translation, or other transformations weaken the signal or change classifier performance?
- Permitted conclusion: Does the result indicate signal presence or a probabilistic classification—or is someone claiming more than the tool can establish?
