To check whether a website is safe before visiting it, inspect the destination’s domain, heed any browser warning, and verify unexpected requests through a known-good channel. No single signal—including HTTPS or a clean reputation check—proves a site is trustworthy. Before entering a password, payment details, or other sensitive information, use the checks below.
How can I check whether a website is safe before visiting it?
- Pause before opening the link. If possible, inspect or copy its destination without visiting it. Be especially cautious when a message pressures you to act quickly, asks you to update payment details, or promotes a price that seems unusually low. Google advises checking purchase sites and watching for suspicious offers in its online safety tips.
- Read the domain carefully. Check the address-bar name for misspellings, extra words, or a domain that does not match the organization named in the message. A familiar logo or convincing page design is not proof: Google Search Central warns that phishing pages may look like the genuine site and advises checking the URL in the address bar (Social Engineering (Phishing and Deceptive Sites)).
- Use a known route for important accounts or payments. Instead of following a message link, open the company’s official site using a bookmark or address you already know. If you need to contact it, use a phone number or other contact information from a trusted source—not details in the suspicious message. The FTC recommends independently verifying unexpected requests in its phishing guidance.
- Stop at a browser danger or certificate warning. Do not bypass a full-page warning or enter information after a certificate or privacy error. Chrome says its unsafe-site warnings can cover risks including phishing, malware, unwanted software, and social engineering; a warning means the site has been flagged as potentially dangerous, not that every threat has been conclusively established. See Chrome’s guidance on unsafe-site warnings.
- Check the connection indicator if the page loads. A non-secure connection is unsuitable for sensitive information. HTTPS and a valid certificate indicate an encrypted, authenticated connection to the domain shown by the browser; they do not prove that the operator is honest or that the domain belongs to the organization you intended. Chrome explains connection symbols and errors in Check if a site’s connection is secure. The FTC also notes that information sent to a scammer’s site can be encrypted in transit and still reach the scammer (Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know).
- Optionally check the URL with Google Safe Browsing. Google’s Site Status tool can show whether it currently identifies a site as dangerous. A warning is a reason to stop; no reported issue is not a safety certification or a promise about what the site may do later.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can tell you | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Address-bar domain | Whether the displayed domain appears to match the organization you intended to visit. | Whether a convincing-looking site is honest just because its logo and design seem familiar. |
| HTTPS and certificate | Whether the browser has an encrypted, authenticated connection to the domain shown. | Whether the domain is legitimate or its operator can be trusted with your information. |
| Browser danger warning | Whether the browser has flagged a potential risk, such as phishing or malware. | Absolute certainty about every threat or the safety of every unflagged site. |
| Google Safe Browsing status check | Whether Google currently reports a known risk for the URL checked. | A guarantee that the page is safe now or will remain safe later. Google’s technical guidance scopes URL checks to destinations displayed in the browser address bar, not embedded resources such as scripts or images (Appropriate Usage | Google Safe Browsing). |
| Independent verification | Whether the request is consistent with information from a company contact route you already trust. | Whether a suspicious message is genuine merely because it includes familiar branding or contact details. |
Why HTTPS is not a trust badge
HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and the domain displayed in the address bar. It does not certify the site owner’s intentions. A scammer can use an encrypted connection, so check that the domain is the one you meant to visit and verify sensitive requests independently. Google’s connection guidance likewise says to check the address-bar name even when a site is secure.
