You usually can’t tell by looking at a passage: text watermarks are designed to be invisible. To check for one, you need a detector that supports the specific watermark scheme and the model or service that may have produced the text. A result is a limited provenance signal—not a universal AI detector or proof of who wrote the passage.
What a text watermark looks like—and what it doesn’t
A text watermark is generally not a hidden character, invisible space, or odd punctuation that you can reveal by copying text into an editor. Instead, it is a subtle statistical pattern in the model’s token choices. Google describes SynthID Text as adjusting generation logits to influence which tokens are selected. OpenAI says textGrain subtly adjusts random word choices rather than inserting hidden characters or formatting.
In general, covert watermarking works by subtly perturbing a content property—such as the prevalence of certain words in context—so a detector can later look for the resulting pattern. NIST describes this as a design approach, not a guarantee that every watermark will be detectable or withstand every kind of editing. NIST AI 100-4 lists robustness, security, low distortion, capacity, efficiency, and minimal disruption as design goals.
How to check for a watermark
- Identify the likely source. If you know which model or service generated the text, start with that provider. A detector for one scheme does not necessarily recognize another.
- Check what the provider’s tool supports. Confirm that it accepts text and covers the relevant model, product, and generation path. Availability and coverage can change.
- Submit the supported text and record the result accurately. Use the tool’s own terms, such as signal detected, not detected, or uncertain. Google says SynthID detection is probabilistic and can use thresholds that affect false positives and false negatives.
- Interpret the outcome narrowly. A positive result concerns the supported signal; it does not establish who authored the text or how much a person contributed. A negative result does not prove the text was written by a human.
Do not substitute a generic AI-writing classifier for a watermark detector. A classifier estimates whether writing resembles AI-generated text; a watermark detector looks for a particular embedded signal. OpenAI distinguishes these approaches in its content provenance documentation.

Which text-watermark checks are available?

These routes cover named provider signals; the cited tools do not establish a reliable checker for every provider’s AI-generated text. Google reported that more than 10 billion pieces of content had been watermarked with SynthID in its May 20, 2025 announcement. That is Google’s cumulative figure as of that announcement, not an independent measurement or a current count.
Why a detector can miss a watermark
There may not be enough text
A short answer may contain too few token choices to produce a detectable pattern. OpenAI says short passages often lack enough text for reliable detection, and that code is harder to watermark because it offers fewer plausible next-token choices.

Edits can weaken the signal
Extensive paraphrasing or translation can alter the token pattern a detector is looking for. Even when some watermark signal survives, the result depends on the particular scheme and detector; a provider’s tool is not necessarily designed to assess heavily transformed text.
Language and thresholds matter
Detection performance can vary across languages. OpenAI reports that, in a test of 500 synthetic English prompts translated into 23 other official EU languages, detection at a 1% false-positive rate was 69.0% for Spanish and 42.2% for Romanian. Those figures describe OpenAI’s stated test setup, not general performance guarantees for other text, languages, or detectors.

A detector’s threshold also affects how it classifies a passage. Google’s SynthID documentation says thresholds can be configured to manage false positives and false negatives, so a result should be understood in the context of the tool’s settings rather than as certainty.

A positive result can be evidence that a supported model likely generated or processed the text. OpenAI cautions that a watermark alone does not establish authorship, ownership, legal responsibility, or how much a person contributed. It cannot tell you whether someone substantially edited a passage or used it only as a starting point.

A negative or uncertain result is also limited: the text may come from an unsupported model or generation path, the watermark may not have been applied, or the signal may be too weak or degraded by changes. Neither outcome is a reliable verdict on whether a person used AI.

- Do not rely on a watermark result alone to accuse someone of misconduct or decide responsibility.
