Meta’s Safety Centre says so directly: “When you block someone, we don’t notify them.” Restrict is a quieter, lighter control, and it also doesn’t announce itself. But “no notification” is not the same as “undetectable,” so this guide explains what each option does and what the other person might still work out.
Block vs. Restrict at a glance
| Question | Block | Restrict |
|---|---|---|
| Is the person notified? | No, according to Meta’s Safety Centre | Meta documents no notification to the restricted person; the effects below are what it describes |
| Level of separation | Stronger boundary | Lighter; limits selected interactions |
| Activity status and read receipts | Not covered in the sources used here | They can’t see when you’re online or whether you’ve read their messages |
| Their new comments on your posts | Not covered in the sources used here | Visible only to them unless you choose to review them |
What blocking does
Blocking is the firmer option, and Meta states plainly that the blocked person isn’t notified. One related detail comes from Instagram’s Help Center search text (the full page couldn’t be verified): a blocked person may still see your likes and comments on public posts, or on posts shared by accounts they follow. If privacy of your own comments matters, don’t assume a block hides them everywhere.
Blocking other accounts they may have or create
In its October 20, 2022 announcement, “Updates to How We Protect People on Instagram From Abuse,” Meta said people can choose to also block other accounts someone may already have or create. Whether the option appears depends on your current app version, so check the prompt when you block.
What restricting does
Meta’s Safety Centre says: “On Instagram, if you restrict someone, they won’t be able to see when you’re online or if you’ve read their messages.” Restriction also moderates comments quietly:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- New comments the person leaves on your posts are visible only to them.
- You can choose to view, approve, delete, or ignore those comments.
- You aren’t notified about their future comments, according to Meta.
Meta’s accessible documentation does not say restriction hides your profile, feed posts, or Stories from that person, so don’t count on it for that. If you need them unable to interact with your content, blocking is the better fit.
How to apply either one
Open the person’s profile and look in its options menu for the Block and Restrict choices. Menu wording and placement differ between iOS, Android, and web and change over time, so follow the labels in your app, or the live Instagram Help Center articles on blocking and restricting, rather than a fixed tap sequence.

Can they still figure it out?
Meta documents no direct alert. It doesn’t promise they can’t notice indirect changes. A blocked person might, for example, find they can no longer reach your profile as before. A restricted person might notice that their comments get no visible response, or that you never appear online. The sources don’t establish exactly what someone will see, so treat “without them knowing” as “without a notification,” not as a guarantee of invisibility.
