Choose a MacBook if you’re comfortable controlling a laptop with its keyboard and Force Touch trackpad. Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro specifications list Force Touch trackpads, not touch-enabled built-in displays. If touching the screen is essential, compare touch-enabled laptops or consider an iPad instead. Check Apple’s current specifications before buying, since product features can change.
Are MacBooks touch screen?
Apple’s current MacBook Air specifications and MacBook Pro specifications describe Force Touch trackpads and do not identify touch-enabled displays. A May 12, 2025 Macworld report likewise said that no Mac offered a touchscreen at that time. That report is dated, so verify the exact model’s specifications when you shop.
What does a MacBook trackpad do?
The built-in Force Touch trackpad is an indirect input device: you move a pointer and use gestures rather than tapping controls on the display. Apple lists precise cursor control, pressure sensing, Force Clicks, accelerators, pressure-sensitive drawing, and Multi-Touch gestures for MacBook Air; MacBook Pro specifications describe the same broad capabilities. Apple Support also explains trackpad features such as three-finger drag in its MacBook support resources.
Choose based on how you want to interact with apps
Choose a MacBook trackpad if you mainly type and navigate
A MacBook Air or MacBook Pro is a sensible fit if your normal workflow is typing, moving a pointer, and using gestures from a laptop posture. The trackpad supports those indirect interactions without requiring you to reach toward the screen. This is a fit based on input style, not a claim that trackpads are more comfortable or faster for everyone.

Choose a touch-enabled device if direct screen input is essential
If you expect to tap, swipe, or manipulate content directly on a laptop display, the MacBook specifications reviewed here do not establish that capability. Consider a touchscreen laptop from another manufacturer, or an iPad if Apple’s touch-first device category suits your workflow. Confirm the specific model’s features before purchasing.
Consider Apple’s Mac and iPad distinction as product framing
Tom Boger, Apple’s vice president of iPad and Mac product marketing at the time, described the iPad as “a touch-first device” and the Mac as designed for “indirect manipulation”—using a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad—in an interview reported by 9to5Mac on May 13, 2024. That explains Apple’s product distinction; it does not mean every person will prefer the same input method.

Can you add a separate trackpad to a MacBook?
For desk use, Apple’s Magic Trackpad (USB-C) is a separate accessory with Force Touch and Multi-Touch gestures. It can provide trackpad input away from the built-in trackpad, but it does not add touch input to the MacBook’s display.
