A sudden optical flash can mark an event; infrared light can reveal dust before or after it; and follow-up observations can examine the gas, dust, and star left behind. Chemical or rotational clues may suggest ingestion in other systems, but they are less direct.
How can astronomers tell a star swallowed a planet?
The strongest evidence comes from a sequence of observations. A transient survey may spot a sudden change in visible light, while infrared monitoring can show that dusty material appeared earlier or persisted afterward. Spectroscopy and infrared imaging can then help characterize the surrounding material and test which physical explanation fits.
Each measurement answers a different question: Did something change? Is dust present? What is the gas made of? Is the star consistent with the proposed scenario? A brightening by itself does not establish exactly what happened.
What happened in the observed case ZTF SLRN-2020?
The Zwicky Transient Facility detected an optical flash from ZTF SLRN-2020. NEOWISE data showed infrared brightening about a year before the flash, a clue that dust was involved. NASA’s 2023 account described it as the first observed case of a star swallowing a planet. The system was reported to be about 12,000 light-years away, and the likely planet’s orbit was closer to its star than Mercury’s is to the Sun—details specific to this event, not requirements for engulfment in general. How did Webb change the explanation?
Webb did not witness the initial plunge. In observations reported April 10, 2025, its Mid-Infrared Instrument and Near-Infrared Spectrograph examined the aftermath. The data revealed a hot gas disk close to the star and an expanding cloud of cooler dust; spectroscopy also identified molecules in the disk, including carbon monoxide.
The central star was not as bright as expected for a red giant. Rather than a star expanding until it engulfed the planet, the team favored a scenario in which the planet’s orbit gradually decayed and it plunged into a star that had not expanded to engulf it. What other clues can point to ingestion?
Chemical abundances
Stars formed together—called co-natal stars—are expected to have similar compositions. A 2024 study compared 91 pairs and identified at least seven possible instances of planetary ingestion, corresponding to an 8% estimate for that sample and method. It is not a universal rate for stars, nor does a chemical difference alone prove ingestion. The study record on PubMed.
X-ray spectra and infalling material
For the young star RW Aur A, changes in X-ray spectra helped researchers probe the density and composition of material around the star. An iron excess was interpreted as possible evidence that planetesimal material had entered the disk, but the explanation was not definitive. NASA’s account of the Chandra observations.

Rotation and surrounding material
Rapid rotation and circumstellar material have been discussed as possible signs of recent engulfment around BP Psc. Those clues support a hypothesis rather than documenting an event in real time, and the companion’s identity is uncertain: it may have been a giant planet or another type of object. When is a companion signal not evidence of engulfment?
A companion can affect a star without being swallowed. Hubble and ground-based observations of Betelgeuse showed a pattern consistent with an orbiting companion producing a wake in the star’s atmosphere. That is evidence of the companion’s influence, not evidence that Betelgeuse has engulfed it. NASA’s Hubble report.

How strong is the evidence in a particular claim?
To assess a reported stellar engulfment, check what the observations actually establish:
- Timing: Did astronomers observe a changing event, or only a possible aftermath?
- Measurement: Is the claim based on optical brightness, infrared emission, spectral lines, X-rays, or chemical abundances?
- Mechanism: Do the data constrain how material reached the star, or merely suggest material transfer?
- Alternatives: Do other explanations remain viable?
ZTF SLRN-2020 stands out because optical and infrared observations captured a changing event and Webb later examined the surrounding gas, dust, and star. Chemical, rotational, and X-ray clues can be valuable, but their meaning depends on the system and the alternatives that remain.
