If you entered a password, verification code, or financial details on a suspicious website, act through the real service—not through links or phone numbers in the message that led you there. Change exposed and reused passwords, review account activity and recovery details, and use the provider’s official recovery process if you are locked out. If you only opened the page, that alone does not prove your account was compromised.
First, identify what you shared
Your next steps depend on whether you only visited the page or also entered information, approved a sign-in, or downloaded something. Do not use contact details or security links from the suspicious message. Open the service’s official app, type its known address yourself, or use a phone number from a card or statement.
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| You entered a password | Change it on the real service and anywhere else you reused it. Then review sessions, account activity, and recovery details. |
| You shared a verification code or approved a sign-in | Treat the account as potentially exposed. Go directly to the service, review activity, and follow its security prompts. Never give a code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly. |
| You entered bank, payment-card, or identity information | Contact the relevant institution through a known genuine channel. In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov if Social Security, credit-card, or bank-account details may have been exposed. |
| You may have downloaded or opened a file or app | Update your existing security software and run a scan. |
| You only visited the page | A visit alone does not establish that credentials were exposed. Consider whether you entered information or downloaded or opened anything. |
If you entered a password or sign-in code
Change the exposed password and reused copies
Go to the legitimate service and change the exposed password promptly. Change it on every other account where you used the same password, then use a different, unique password for each account. Microsoft Support advises: “Immediately change the passwords on all affected accounts, and anywhere else that you might use the same password.” Its phishing guidance also recommends recording what information you shared and turning on multifactor authentication (MFA).
The FTC’s October 2024 consumer alert suggests passwords of 12 to 15 characters. Treat that as the alert’s advice, not a universal security threshold; a unique password for each account is important. A password manager can help organize unique passwords, but no particular product is endorsed here.

End other sessions and inspect account activity
If you can still sign in, use the account’s security settings to sign out of other devices or sessions, if that option is available. Review recent sign-ins, including the times, devices, and other details the service provides. Report activity you do not recognize through the provider’s own security interface.
Google recommends responding promptly to security alerts and securing the account when activity is unfamiliar. Microsoft provides a Recent activity page and account-security controls for reviewing unrecognized events.

Check recovery details and enable MFA
Review the recovery email addresses and phone numbers on the account, and remove changes you did not make. Turn on MFA for important accounts wherever the provider offers it. The available options vary by account and may include text or email codes, an authenticator app, biometrics, or a security key. A physical key is optional and works only if the account supports it; adding a factor does not replace changing an exposed password or reviewing sessions.
If you cannot sign in
Use the affected service’s official account-recovery instructions, reached through its app or known website—not a link in the suspicious message. After you regain access, check that the recovery email address and phone number are still yours, as the FTC advises in its hacked-account guidance.

If the account belongs to your workplace or school, notify its IT support team. Follow the organization’s instructions rather than trying to manage a work or school account as if it were a personal account.
If you only visited the suspicious website
Loading a suspicious page does not, by itself, prove that an account was compromised. Check whether you typed a password or other personal information, shared a one-time code, approved a sign-in, or downloaded and opened a file. If none of those happened, the guidance cited here does not establish that a visit alone exposed your credentials.
