For a nearby transfer, use Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability if the Android phone supports it; otherwise, use Quick Share’s QR-code option. For ongoing access, share through Google Photos or an iCloud Link. To preserve the original, also check the iPhone’s sharing format and Google Photos backup quality: a transfer route can be lossless while a format conversion or compressed cloud backup is not.

Google describes Quick Share as sending “full-resolution photos and videos without losing any of their original detail.” That is Google’s feature description, not an independent cross-device quality test. Whichever route you choose, distinguish keeping image resolution from keeping the same file format, metadata, or edit history.
Transfer directly between nearby phones
Android to iPhone
- Check whether the Android model supports Quick Share with AirDrop. Google’s current list includes Pixel 8a or later and selected models from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola. The supported list can change, so check Google’s Quick Share compatibility and instructions for the exact model.
- On the iPhone, open AirDrop settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On Android, select the photos or files, tap Share > Quick Share, and choose the nearby iPhone.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the iPhone.
iPhone to supported Android
- On Android, open Quick Share and switch to Receive mode. Samsung users may also need to enable Share with Apple devices.
- On iPhone, select the items, tap Share, then choose AirDrop.
- Choose the Android device and accept the transfer on that phone.
Interoperability is limited to selected Android devices, not every Android phone. If the other device does not appear, confirm the Android model’s eligibility, keep the phones close, and check the receiving phone’s visibility or Receive mode before choosing the QR fallback.
Use a QR code when direct interoperability is unavailable
- On Android, open Quick Share, select the items, then tap Use QR code.
- Have the iPhone user scan the code. It opens a Google web page where the recipient can download the files.
- Save images to Photos or documents to Files. Google’s iOS instructions say videos can be downloaded but cannot be saved or shared directly from that page; some files may download as a ZIP.
Google’s current Quick Share Help guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, says the QR transfer requires internet on both devices, uploads files encrypted to Google’s servers, and keeps them available for 24 hours. The service limit is 10 GB of files per 24 hours and 1,000 files per session. The files do not use the sender’s personal Google Drive storage, though mobile data charges may apply off Wi-Fi. These are service limits, not guarantees of transfer speed or of unchanged file formats.

Preserve the iPhone file format and metadata
Before sharing from Photos, select an item, tap Share > Options, and review these controls:
- Format: Current prevents format conversion. Automatic selects a suitable format. Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV.
- Location: Turn this off if you do not want location data included.
- All Photos Data: Apple says this shares the original file with edit history and metadata, and is available with AirDrop and iCloud Links. The recipient can view and modify the current version.
- iCloud Link: Creates a URL to view or download photos and videos. Apple’s iPhone User Guide says these links remain available for 30 days.
Preserving metadata is not always desirable: a photo’s location can reveal where it was taken. Choose whether to include it before sending rather than assuming that a transfer method removes it.

Keep Google Photos backups at original quality
A file may be reduced during backup even if the original phone-to-phone transfer was unchanged. In Google Photos backup settings, choose Original quality when you need backups stored at the resolution captured without quality changes. Google says these backups use Google Account storage.
Google’s current Photos Help guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, describes Storage saver as potentially compressing or resizing files: photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. The format may also change, for example to JPEG. Some file types are ineligible for compression and remain at original size. Google Photos also offers Express quality, but the guidance cited here does not establish its behavior in comparable detail.

Share cloud links with the right access expectations
Google Photos shared albums are useful when people need access to a collection rather than a one-time transfer. Google says shared links are unguessable, but anyone with an active link can access the album and pass the link on. Removing someone from the album does not revoke an active link. Reset link sharing to invalidate the previous URL.
An iCloud Link is another option from iPhone; it is available for 30 days. For either service, a recipient needs internet access to view or download the shared items. Use a direct transfer instead when you do not want the files temporarily hosted through the QR fallback or a cloud-sharing link.

What about messaging apps?
Messaging apps do not all handle photos and files the same way, and their behavior can vary by app version or send option. If your app offers a file, document, or original-quality option, use it when preserving the original matters. After delivery, compare the received file’s dimensions and size with the original; do not assume a normal photo attachment stayed unchanged.
