Turn on your bank’s strongest available second factor, use a long password you do not reuse, and secure the email account used for password resets. If someone unexpectedly asks you for a verification code or tells you to move money, stop and contact your bank through its app or a trusted phone number.
Choose the strongest second factor your bank supports
Two-factor authentication (2FA), also called two-step or multifactor authentication, requires another proof of identity in addition to your password. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends enabling it for sensitive accounts such as banking; these settings are not usually on by default. Available methods depend on your bank.
| Method | Security considerations | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Security key | The FTC describes a physical security key as the strongest of the common methods discussed. Keys may connect by USB or NFC. | Confirm your bank accepts the key and that it works with your device. Do not assume a particular bank or device supports a particular key. |
| Authenticator app | It avoids the SIM-swap weakness that can expose text-message codes. | Check whether your bank offers app-based codes and follow its enrollment and recovery instructions. |
| Text message (SMS) | Convenient, but codes can be exposed through SIM swapping. | If this is the only second-factor option your bank offers, enabling it is better than having no second factor. |
| Email code | Its safety depends partly on the security of the email account receiving the code. | Secure that inbox with a unique password and strong authentication where available. |
The FTC characterizes text and email codes as the least secure of these common 2FA options. This is a general comparison, not a guarantee about a particular bank’s setup or support.
Enable it through your bank’s trusted settings
- Open a trusted route to the bank. Use its official app or type a website address you already know. Do not follow a link from an unexpected message.
- Find the security setting. After signing in, look for “two-factor authentication,” “two-step verification,” or “multifactor authentication.” Labels and enrollment steps vary by institution; use the bank’s official help materials if you need guidance.
- Select the best supported method. Choose a security key or authenticator app if offered. If the bank provides only text or email codes, turn on the available second factor and never share a code with someone who contacts you.
- Review remembered devices. Choose to remember only personal devices you control. Do not save a banking login on a public computer.
Before buying or enrolling a physical key, check the bank’s supported methods and your device’s USB ports or NFC support. A FIDO security key may be an option only if it is compatible with both.

Strengthen your password and recovery email
- Use a long, unique password. The FTC suggests aiming for at least 12 characters and advises against reusing passwords. Change any banking password that you have reused elsewhere or believe may have been exposed.
- Generate and save it safely. A browser’s password generator or a password manager can create and remember a strong password; buying a separate tool is not required.
- Secure the email account used for resets. Password-reset links often go to email. If someone takes over that inbox, they may be able to reset passwords for other accounts. Give the email account its own unique password and enable its strongest available second factor.
Do not share verification codes or move money on request
A verification code can help prove that you are the account holder. The FTC’s rule is direct: “Never give your verification code to someone else. It’s only for you to log into your account.” Treat an unexpected request for a code as a warning, even if the caller or sender claims to be from the bank’s fraud department or says suspicious activity is underway.
Stop interacting and contact the bank yourself using the number on a statement, the official app, or a known-real website. Do not use the phone number or link in the suspicious message, and do not transfer money to an account someone says is safer. The FTC identifies requests for verification codes or instructions to move money as scam patterns.
