Connect from the Mac’s Displays settings, then choose whether the iPad extends your workspace or shows the same screen.
Check that your MacBook Pro and iPad support Sidecar
Sidecar requires macOS Catalina 10.15 or later on the Mac and iPadOS 13 or later on the iPad. Apple’s compatibility list includes MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later, and these iPad models:
- Any iPad Pro model
- iPad (6th generation or later)
- iPad mini (5th generation or later)
- iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
These are Apple’s stated compatibility requirements in its Sidecar support article. If either device is below its listed model or operating-system minimum, it will not meet Apple’s requirements for Sidecar.
Connect the iPad with Sidecar
- On the MacBook Pro, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Click Add Display, then select your iPad.
- In Displays, choose whether to extend or mirror the Mac’s desktop and adjust the display arrangement.
On macOS 12.5 or earlier, use System Preferences instead of System Settings. Apple’s Mac User Guide documents Sidecar display options.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose extended or mirrored display
Extend the desktop
Extending gives you additional desktop space: you can move windows between the MacBook Pro display and the iPad. In Displays, arrange the screens to match their physical positions—for example, place the iPad to the left in the settings if it sits to the Mac’s left on your desk. This makes moving the pointer between screens feel natural.
Mirror the display
Mirroring shows the same desktop content on the iPad as on the MacBook Pro. Choose this when you want the iPad to display what is already on the Mac screen rather than act as extra workspace.

Use Sidecar wirelessly or with a cable
Wireless connection
For wireless Sidecar, Apple requires both devices to use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. Turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices, keep them within 10 metres (30 feet), and do not use an internet or mobile connection-sharing setup that conflicts with Apple’s requirements. Apple lists these wireless conditions in its support article.
Apple does not make a same-Wi-Fi-network connection a universal prerequisite in its basic wireless requirements. However, if a wireless connection fails, checking that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network is one useful troubleshooting step.

USB connection
You can also connect the iPad to the MacBook Pro with a USB cable. Use a cable whose connectors match the ports on your particular Mac and iPad; the right type depends on the models. If the iPad asks whether to trust the Mac, accept the prompt to allow USB Sidecar. A direct cable connection can also keep the iPad charged while you work.
Fix common Sidecar connection problems
- The iPad does not appear under Add Display: Confirm that both devices meet the model and OS requirements, use the same Apple Account, and have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff turned on. If connecting wirelessly, check that they are on the same Wi-Fi network and close enough to one another.
- Wireless connection still fails: Check whether a VPN is restricting local-network connections, then try again. Apple also advises checking the network and restarting or updating devices when troubleshooting Sidecar.
- USB connection is not working: Make sure the cable fits both devices and respond to any trust prompt on the iPad. If no prompt appears, disconnect and reconnect the cable, then check again.
- Settings or options look different: On macOS 12.5 or earlier, open System Preferences rather than System Settings. Check that the Mac and iPad have versions of macOS and iPadOS that meet Sidecar’s minimums.
Use Apple Pencil with Sidecar, if you have one
Apple Pencil is optional. When using Sidecar, it can interact directly with supported content on the iPad—for example, pointing, selecting, drawing, editing photos, and manipulating objects. You do not need an Apple Pencil to extend or mirror the Mac desktop.

Sidecar or Universal Control?
Choose Sidecar when you want the iPad to serve as another display for the MacBook Pro. Universal Control is different: it lets you use the Mac’s keyboard, mouse, or trackpad to control the iPad’s own apps while both devices continue running their separate interfaces. Apple explains this distinction in its Sidecar support article.
