A STEAM lab is the better fit when students need to investigate, design, build, program, test and revise projects. A computer lab is the better fit when the main need is dependable access to computers and software for digital work. Neither room label causes better learning on its own. No controlled study compares the two room types, so the right choice follows the curriculum and what students will actually do.
What each setup is actually for
STEAM lab
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education defines a makerspace as “an environment or facility that provides resources, materials, and equipment for students to conceive, create, and collaborate through making.” It describes making as “a hands-on learning approach that encourages students to imagine, create, and tinker through the process of manufacturing, testing, and demonstrating their ideas.” (CTE Makeover Challenge). That is a makerspace definition, not a universal definition of every STEAM lab.
Bank Street School for Children describes its STEAM Lab as integrating programming, fabrication and technology in society, using inquiry-based projects and targeted skills instruction. Its examples include coding, robotics, sensors, LEDs, 3D printers, laser cutters and saws.
Computer lab
The sources reviewed offer no standard definition of a computer lab. In practice it means a room of computers with the software students need, set up for reliable, managed access. Its strength is digital work: research, writing, programming, digital design and assessment.

Key differences at a glance
| Factor | STEAM lab | Computer lab |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Design, build, test, revise, often across disciplines | Screen-based tasks and software use |
| Typical resources | Work surfaces, hand tools, sensors, robotics, possibly 3D printers; some programs add laser cutters or saws | Computers, software licences, network, peripherals |
| Main operating needs | Supervision, safety, storage, consumables, maintenance | Licensing, security, device upkeep, technical support |
| Staff skills | Facilitating open-ended projects and safe tool use | Software and device management |
Cost is not what makes a lab “hands-on”
The federal definition centers on student activity: conceiving, creating, collaborating, testing and demonstrating. A school does not need laser cutters, CNC machines or power tools to offer hands-on learning, and suitability and supervision of such tools vary by age and local policy. Cardboard prototyping, sensors, LEDs and basic tools can support real design cycles. Equipment without a workable curriculum and operating plan is not evidence of hands-on learning.
Computers still belong in STEAM work
“Hands-on versus computers” is a false split. Programming, digital design, research and documentation often need computers even when students also fabricate physical artifacts. A robot needs code; a 3D print needs a model. The question is whether the room supports the whole project sequence, not whether screens are present.

Decision framework
| If the priority is… | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Physical prototyping, fabrication and iterative testing | STEAM/makerspace capability | Age-appropriate equipment, trained supervision, safe layout, storage, consumables, maintenance |
| Reliable access to computers and software for digital tasks | Computer lab capability | Device specifications, software licensing, multi-user terms, accessibility, security, technical support |
| Projects that move between coding/design and physical making | Flexible or combined arrangement | Work zones, power and network access, storage, scheduling, supervision, realistic equipment use |
| A new or remodeled facility | Adaptable space planned around curriculum | Local building and safety codes, district standards, facilities guidance, long-term maintenance |
Why flexible spaces are often the practical answer
The Massachusetts School Building Authority’s Science Laboratories and STE Learning Spaces Guidelines say science and technology/engineering spaces should be adaptable to a range of curricula and hands-on experiential uses, including makerspaces, STEAM labs and fabrication labs. The review of best practices behind it dates to 2018, and it is Massachusetts guidance, so check current local requirements. Where the curriculum needs both screen and physical work, a hybrid layout with laptops or a computer zone beside project benches avoids building two single-purpose rooms.
Compare options on these criteria
- Curriculum fit: Map equipment to the courses. Project Lead The Way, for example, maps equipment and supplies to its programs, but notes its public page is not a complete course product list. Use the actual curriculum requirements and district technology advice, not a generic starter package.
- Student access and participation: Can every student reach tools and devices, including those who need accessibility accommodations?
- Staff capability: The MIT Edgerton Center’s K-12 Maker Lab offers project tutorials and educator professional development, and describes teachers shifting toward facilitating meaningful projects while students build persistence, problem-solving and self-direction. These are program aims, not a measured comparison of room types.
- Software and device compatibility: The 2024 STEAM Toolkit and User Guide advises checking discounts, multi-user licensing, device compatibility and school or district technology and security requirements before buying digital tools.
- Safety, storage and maintenance: Supervision ratios, ventilation for printers or cutters, tool storage, replacement parts and consumables belong in the plan alongside the purchase list.
- Total cost of ownership: Include training, licences, repairs and consumables over the equipment’s life, not just the purchase price.
Equipment examples to consider, not requirements
Classroom 3D printers and educational robotics kits are common starting categories, and Bank Street and the Department of Education both name 3D printers among makerspace or fabrication equipment. None of the sources endorses a specific model or vendor. Before buying, check age fit, curriculum compatibility, training needs, replacement-part availability, safety, IT policy and budget.

How to choose
- List the projects students will do in a typical term and note which steps are digital, which are physical.
- If almost all steps are digital, prioritize computer access and software. If many are physical, prioritize benches, storage and tools.
- If both, plan zones or mobile devices in a flexible room.
- Confirm staffing, safety, IT approval and local codes before purchasing.
- Start with modest, well-supported equipment and expand as use proves demand.
