Before buying a GPU for AI, confirm that it can run your specific workload, has enough memory for your model and settings, is supported by your software stack, and fits your computer’s power and physical limits. There is no universal best GPU: the right choice depends on what you plan to run, where you will run it, and your budget.

1. Define the workload and where it will run

Start with the job, not the product label. Training, fine-tuning, local inference, and image generation can place different demands on memory, throughput, and the rest of the system. Also decide whether the GPU will go in a local workstation or a shared server; deployment scale changes what matters in a shortlist.

Vendor positioning can help identify intended use, but it is not an independent performance ranking. AMD describes Instinct GPUs as intended for training, large-scale inference, and high-performance computing, while positioning Radeon products for local LLMs, graphics, and creative workflows. Treat those descriptions as guidance from AMD, not proof that a product is the best fit for your project.

2. Check GPU memory against your model and settings

Check the capacity of the exact GPU model and configuration you are considering. Whether a model fits depends not just on model size, but also on precision or quantization, context length, batch size, and other workload settings. A card marketed for AI is not necessarily able to run your model at your chosen settings.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

There is no universal VRAM minimum established for all AI projects. Compare your planned workload with reliable information for the model and software you intend to use, then leave room for the rest of the workload rather than choosing solely by an AI branding claim.

For scale, AMD’s ROCm documentation lists the Radeon AI PRO R9700 with 32 GiB of VRAM, the Radeon PRO W7900 with 48 GiB, and the Radeon RX 9070 XT with 16 GiB. NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti in 16 GB and 8 GB GDDR7 configurations, and the RTX 5060 with 8 GB. These are vendor-published specifications, not recommendations or guarantees that a particular model will fit.

3. Verify software support for the exact configuration

Check compatibility for the specific GPU, operating system, framework, libraries, drivers, and software release you plan to use. Support can differ by GPU generation and by whether the task is compute or graphics. Do not assume that a GPU family name alone guarantees compatibility.

AMD’s ROCm compatibility matrix is release-specific. Its ROCm 7.0.1 matrix, dated March 31, 2026, lists supported operating systems and GPU targets for compute workloads; Radeon and Ryzen graphics workloads use a separate compatibility path. Before purchase, consult the active matrix and confirm that it covers your exact machine configuration.

4. Compare performance on your actual software path

Once a card passes the memory and compatibility checks, compare it using the workload you intend to run: the same model, precision, batch or context settings, framework, and relevant software versions. Peak figures and general product claims do not show how a GPU will perform on your project.

AMD has published local-AI comparisons involving the Radeon AI PRO R9700 and GeForce RTX 5080, but those results use different software paths and dated test configurations. They should be read with the test date, model, software, system, and vendor attribution in view; they do not establish a universal AMD-versus-NVIDIA winner.

5. Confirm that the card fits your system

A compatible GPU still needs to fit electrically and physically. Check the exact board’s dimensions and slot width, the available motherboard slot and lane configuration, the case clearance, cooling, PSU capacity, and required power connector and cable. Card dimensions can vary between manufacturers even when they use the same GPU model.

NVIDIA’s listed requirements illustrate why checking the exact SKU matters: its RTX 5060 Ti specifications give 180 W total graphics power and 600 W required system power, while the RTX 5060 is listed at 145 W and 550 W, respectively. These are NVIDIA’s model specifications; confirm the connector and physical dimensions on the specific board manufacturer’s listing before ordering.

6. Work out the total project cost

Include any upgrades the GPU purchase triggers. A new card may require a different PSU or cable, a larger case, improved cooling, or changes to memory, storage, or the underlying platform. Consider power use, warranty and support, and whether the system leaves room for a future upgrade.

Prices and availability depend on country and retailer, so these specifications do not establish a current best-value choice. Compare local prices for the complete system you need, not just the GPU, and avoid relying on a price or ranking that does not match your region and workload.

A practical shortlist checklist

  1. Name the task: training, fine-tuning, inference, or image generation—and whether it runs locally or on a server.
  2. Write down the workload settings: model, precision or quantization, context length, and batch size.
  3. Check the exact GPU’s memory: make sure the capacity suits those settings rather than relying on the product’s AI label.
  4. Verify the software stack: GPU, framework, libraries, drivers, operating system, and release.
  5. Compare relevant performance: favor results on your intended model and software path over peak or marketing figures.
  6. Check system fit: dimensions, slot width and lanes, cooling, PSU capacity, connector, and cable.
  7. Calculate total cost: include required system upgrades, local pricing, and ownership considerations.
