Yes. You can use SmartThings with Matter devices from an iPhone or a non-Samsung Android phone. You’ll need the SmartThings app, a Samsung account, and a Matter-compatible SmartThings hub; the hub—not the phone—acts as the Matter controller after setup. If your device uses Thread, the controller also needs Thread Border Router capability.
What you need besides a Samsung phone
- A compatible phone: SmartThings is available for Android and iOS. Samsung’s hub setup instructions include downloading the app from Google Play or Apple’s App Store, so a Galaxy phone is not required. See Samsung’s installation guidance and its SmartThings overview.
- A Samsung account: Samsung says an account is required to use SmartThings.
- A Matter controller hub: Samsung requires a Matter-compatible hub to connect Matter devices to SmartThings. The phone does not replace this hub. See Samsung’s SmartThings product page.
Why the phone and hub have different roles
During onboarding, the SmartThings app on your phone acts as the Matter commissioner: it facilitates adding the device. After onboarding, a Matter controller hub is responsible for controlling it. SmartThings Support describes the mobile device with the app as the commissioner and separately identifies the controller as the hub. Read SmartThings’ Matter integration guide for the role definitions.
Check whether your Matter device uses Thread
Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi/LAN or Thread. A Wi-Fi/LAN Matter device does not have the same Thread-router requirement. A Matter-over-Thread device needs a controller with Thread Border Router capability so it can join and communicate on the Thread network.
When checking a hub, verify its current SmartThings support and whether it includes a Thread Border Router. SmartThings’ January 19, 2023 support article named the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter controller examples at that time. It said the SmartThings 2015 Hub (STH-ETH and others) could support Wi-Fi/LAN Matter devices but lacked a Thread router, requiring a separate third-party Thread Border Router for Thread devices. These are dated examples, not a complete or guaranteed-current compatibility list.

Check app and hub compatibility before setup
SmartThings’ Matter integration article was published January 19, 2023. Its listed commissioner requirements—Android SmartThings app version 1.7.91 or higher, or iOS 16.2 or higher with SmartThings app version 1.6.94 or higher—are historical requirements, not a reliable statement of today’s minimums. Samsung’s UK installation page, updated September 23, 2026, gives Android 7.0 or later or iOS 12.0 or later as installation guidance, while Samsung notes that supported operating systems can vary by region and change.
Before buying or troubleshooting, check the current SmartThings listing in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, plus the documentation for your specific phone, hub, and Matter device. Confirm the hub supports the device’s transport (Wi-Fi/LAN or Thread), that any Thread Border Router requirement is met, and that the hub model and firmware are currently supported in your country.

Set it up from an iPhone or Android phone
- Install SmartThings from Google Play on Android or the Apple App Store on iPhone. Samsung’s SmartThings hub setup instructions cover both app stores and setup through the phone app.
- Sign in with a Samsung account.
- Set up or confirm a Matter-compatible SmartThings hub in the app.
- Check whether the Matter device uses Wi-Fi/LAN or Thread. For Thread, ensure the controller includes Thread Border Router capability or that a supported separate Thread Border Router is available.
- Use the device’s Matter pairing process in SmartThings to add it. The app facilitates onboarding; the compatible hub controls the device afterward.
