If SmartThings cannot add your Matter device, first confirm that your SmartThings home has a compatible Matter controller—and, for a Thread device, a Thread border router. Then retry setup with the device in pairing mode, using its QR code or the printed setup code. Work through the checks below before resetting anything; use the device maker’s reset instructions if needed, and avoid removing the hub as an early fix.
How to add a Matter device in SmartThings
SmartThings’ manual setup flow is to scan the device’s Matter QR code or enter its setup code, then select a hub and room. The exact app labels can change, but the usual path is:
- Open the SmartThings app and tap Add (+), then Add Device.
- Tap Scan and scan the Matter QR code on the device or its packaging. If the camera cannot scan it, choose the setup-code entry option—often labeled Enter—and type the code.
- Select the Matter controller or hub and the room for the device.
- Wait for the connection. If prompted, select the Wi-Fi or Thread network.
- If setup completes, rename the device if you wish and save it.
SmartThings says the QR code contains an 11- or 21-digit setup code that can be entered manually. Treat it as a private onboarding credential; do not post or share it publicly. See SmartThings’ Matter setup and compatibility guidance.
Check the controller before retrying
Matter onboarding involves three roles: the Matter device, the phone running SmartThings as the commissioner, and a compatible Matter controller. The phone facilitates onboarding; the controller is responsible for controlling the device afterward. A phone running the app alone is not a substitute for a controller already added to the SmartThings home.

SmartThings’ support article lists these minimums for using its app as commissioner: Android with SmartThings app version 1.7.91 or later, or iOS 16.2 or later with SmartThings app version 1.6.94 or later. It lists firmware 45.9 or later for the Samsung Matter controllers it covers. These are requirements stated in SmartThings’ support material, whose publication date is not stated there; check the current guidance for your model and region because requirements can change.
SmartThings names the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as controller examples. The SmartThings 2015 Hub supports Wi-Fi/LAN Matter but does not have a Thread router built in.

If the device uses Thread, verify border-router support
A Thread device needs a Matter controller with Thread border-router capability. That capability may be built into the controller or provided by another compatible device on the home network. If you use a SmartThings 2015 Hub, SmartThings says you need a third-party Thread border router for Thread devices.
For that 2015 Hub setup, connect the hub and third-party border router to the same Wi-Fi/LAN. If SmartThings asks for the Thread network key, retrieve it from the border router or its manufacturer’s app; do not guess it. If you already have compatible controller and Thread equipment, check that before considering a new purchase. Verify support for your exact Matter device, controller model, firmware, and region.

My Matter device fails to onboard
Check these likely causes in order, retrying setup after correcting each one:
- Pairing mode or expired setup window: Put the device in pairing mode using its manufacturer’s instructions. If it timed out or may still be associated with another setup, follow the maker’s reset procedure.
- QR scan or code entry: Make sure the QR code is fully visible and the phone camera can focus on it. If scanning still fails, enter the printed setup code instead.
- Controller availability: Confirm the intended controller is already added to SmartThings and online. If it is not selectable, check its power and network connection.
- Range and signal: Keep the device within range of both the phone and controller while pairing. Move the device or relevant Wi-Fi/Thread router closer if SmartThings reports a weak signal.
- Network compatibility: If the app reports an incompatible network, check whether the device supports that network’s frequency and security type. SmartThings’ troubleshooting article identifies 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz as one frequency distinction to check.
- Restart and retry: Restart the Matter device and controller, then try onboarding again. If it still fails, reset the device only by following its manufacturer’s instructions, and fully restart the SmartThings app.
SmartThings’ troubleshooting instructions are in its Matter support article. Device reset steps vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s directions rather than a generic button sequence.

I don’t see a Wi-Fi or Thread signal when pairing
First check whether the controller is online and whether the phone and device are in range of the relevant network equipment. Move the device or router closer if the signal is weak. For a Thread device, confirm that a Thread border router is available and that the setup is using the intended Thread network. For Wi-Fi, check the device’s supported frequency and security type against the network you selected.
If the network still does not appear, restart the device and controller and retry. If you are using a SmartThings 2015 Hub with Thread, verify that the third-party border router is on the same Wi-Fi/LAN as the hub, then retrieve the correct Thread network key from the router or its app.

The device connected, but now it is offline
Use SmartThings’ recovery sequence for a Matter device that was added but is not working:
- Check the device’s range and remove obstructions where possible.
- Power-cycle the device if its design allows it; confirm it has adequate battery or mains power. Some battery-powered devices may begin failing before the battery reaches 0%.
- Restart the SmartThings app and power-cycle the Matter controller.
- If the device remains unreliable, remove it from SmartThings and add it again.
For model-specific reset or power instructions, consult the device manufacturer.
When to contact support—and what not to reset
If the device still cannot be reliably controlled after these checks, contact Samsung through Contact Us in the SmartThings app menu. Contact the device maker for its pairing-mode and reset procedure.
Do not remove or factory-reset the hub as a routine troubleshooting step. SmartThings warns that removing a hub restores factory settings and permanently deletes associated device connections, routines, configurations, and services. Devices may also require their own reset or exclusion before they can be connected again. See SmartThings’ hub-removal warning.
