AI video generators use a model to create or transform video from inputs such as text, images, or existing footage. Credits are each provider’s own billing meter—not a universal currency—and permission to use a service’s output does not automatically clear rights in people, brands, or source material shown in it. The details depend on the model, product, settings, and provider terms.

What an AI video model does

A video model is the component that turns an input into video or transforms video that already exists. The available inputs and controls vary by service; text-to-video, image-to-video, and video-to-video are useful names for different workflows, not guarantees that every generator supports all three.

OpenAI’s Sora system card documents one system that accepted text, image, and video inputs. Its described workflows included generating a video from text, animating a still image, extending a video, and filling missing frames. These examples help explain the range of possible tasks, but Sora is not currently available: OpenAI says the product ended on April 26, 2026. The system card is therefore a technical example, not a recommendation to use Sora today. OpenAI’s Sora system card; OpenAI’s Sora safety information.

In practice, a creator supplies a prompt, media, or both, chooses the controls the product exposes, and receives a generated or transformed clip. The model’s capabilities are only part of the result: product settings, restrictions, and provider safeguards also shape what can be submitted and produced. For example, OpenAI described visible and invisible provenance signals and C2PA metadata for Sora videos, as well as a consent attestation for uploaded images depicting people. Those were Sora safeguards, not a universal standard or proof that every depicted person had granted all necessary permissions. OpenAI’s Sora safety information.

How video-generation credits work

Credits are units defined by an individual provider. They have no shared industry meaning or fixed cash value across services. A quoted credit rate is useful only when it is tied to the provider, product surface, model, and generation settings that produced it.

Before budgeting, check the current rate for the exact model, duration, resolution, audio option, and any input or reference-media settings. A first attempt may not meet the brief, and retries can consume more credits: Runway’s plan guidance notes that each generation uses credits and that a prompt may take more than one try to get the desired result. Runway creator-product examples

Runway’s help documentation lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second in its creator product. At that listed rate, a five-second generation uses 60 credits and a ten-second generation uses 120. These are Runway-specific examples, not a standard rate for AI video services. Runway’s credit guide.

Runway API examples

API rates are a separate product surface from the creator app. Runway’s developer pricing documentation lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, and Veo 3.1 at 40 credits per second with audio or 20 credits per second without audio. Do not use these API rates to estimate a creator-app generation unless that app’s own rate table says they apply. Runway developer API pricing.

Runway Standard plan examples

Runway’s Standard plan documentation gives examples of 400 credits for ten seconds of Veo 3.1 with audio and 240 credits for twenty seconds of Gen-4.5. Those examples describe the plan guidance, not a cross-provider price comparison. Check the current plan page and model settings before relying on any credit estimate. Runway Standard plan details.

What credits can—and cannot—tell you about cost

A credit count alone does not tell you what a finished clip costs in money or how many attempts it will take. Providers set their own credit allocations and rates, and a clip that needs several generations can use more credits than a single successful output. Compare the provider’s current cash price and credit allocation for the product you plan to use, then estimate the required settings and likely retries. Do not compare credit counts from different providers as if they were the same currency.

What usage rights usually mean in practice

Provider permission to use generated content is not the same as a guarantee that the output is copyrighted, exclusive, cleared for every use, or free of third-party rights. It also does not settle disclosure obligations imposed by a platform, contract, or applicable law. Separate the service’s permission from the rights in the material you submit and the material shown in the result.

Runway’s creator help page says that, as between the creator and Runway, the creator retains ownership and rights in creations and generations. It also says Runway does not impose non-commercial restrictions on creations, subject to its terms and policies, and that formal credit to Runway is not required. Those are Runway’s statements about its service—not universal legal rules or a promise that every output has exclusive copyright protection. Review the applicable terms and policies for the account and product you use. Runway usage rights; Runway guidance on commercial use of creator content.

Runway Dev’s commercial-use guidance says commercial use of outputs is allowed subject to its agreement and Usage Policy. It also distinguishes that permission from rights to third-party likenesses, trademarks, or other input material, and from questions of copyright ownership and disclosure. A service’s permission to use an output does not grant permission to use a person’s image, a brand, or source material you did not have rights to submit. Runway Dev commercial-use guidance.

A practical check before publishing a generated clip

  1. Confirm the service and plan. Check the current terms for the exact product you used—creator app or API—and verify that your intended use is allowed.
  2. Check the inputs. Make sure you have appropriate rights or permissions for uploaded footage, images, music, and other source material, including any identifiable person or trademark.
  3. Review the output. Look for recognizable people, brands, or other material that may raise rights or consent concerns. A provider safeguard or consent prompt does not itself establish that all necessary permissions have been obtained.
  4. Check publishing rules. Review the rules of the platform where you will post the clip and any legal or contractual disclosure requirements that apply to your use.
  5. Recheck volatile details. Credit rates, model availability, plan allocations, and terms can change. Use the provider’s current official pages when budgeting or deciding whether a particular use is permitted.
