Yes. Ansible can provision cloud resources and then configure systems and applications. Its architecture documentation explicitly includes cloud provisioning, configuration management, application deployment and orchestration. The practical answer depends on whether the provider collection supports the particular service and task you need, and whether its software, authentication and compatibility requirements fit your environment.
How Ansible automates cloud resources
Ansible is an automation engine that uses YAML playbooks to describe tasks. Cloud-provider integrations are generally delivered as collections: packages that can include modules, plugins, roles and playbooks. A module performs a particular operation, such as managing a cloud resource; plugins provide supporting functionality.
Collections may be installed separately from ansible-core, so installing Ansible does not necessarily install the cloud integration you need. Ansible’s architecture documentation describes its scope, while its collection documentation explains how collections extend its functionality.
What provider support looks like
AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud each have documented Ansible collections. Their supported operations and runtime requirements are not interchangeable. The collection indexes and module pages reviewed on October 7, 2026, reported the following compatibility details; collection versions can change, so confirm the live documentation before installing.

What to check before choosing Ansible for a cloud workflow
Evaluate the exact work you intend to automate rather than relying on a general claim that a provider is supported.

- Service and lifecycle coverage: Find a module for every resource and action you need, including creation, updates and deletion if your workflow requires them. A collection’s existence does not mean it covers every service or operation.
- Compatibility: Check that the collection version supports the
ansible-coreversion in your control or execution environment. - Dependencies: Review the task-specific module documentation for required Python libraries and versions, and install them in the environment where the module runs.
- Authentication and permissions: Confirm the supported credential method and give the automation identity only the permissions the workflow requires.
- Workflow boundary: Decide whether the task is cloud-resource provisioning, configuring hosts after provisioning, or coordinating both. Ansible documents capabilities across these areas, but the cited documentation does not benchmark it against other infrastructure-as-code tools.
Where cloud tasks run and how to handle credentials
For AWS, the Ansible guide says cloud-control tasks commonly run on the local machine. Its examples use localhost for provisioning and describe credentials supplied through environment variables, module options or profiles. Follow the provider’s guidance for your chosen authentication method, keep secrets out of playbooks, and use a protected mechanism such as Ansible Vault for encrypted variable files where appropriate. Is Ansible a fit for your use case?
Ansible is a reasonable option when you want one automation workflow to manage supported cloud resources and configure the systems or applications that use them. It is not enough to know that a provider has a collection: verify that the modules cover your specific services and lifecycle actions, then validate dependencies, compatibility and access controls. The official material establishes capabilities and requirements, not comparative evidence about speed, cost or superiority over other tools.
