A school STEAM lab needs equipment that supports the projects students will actually do—not a standard shopping list. Start with learning goals, student age, class size, staff expertise, available space and local safety requirements. Build the basics first, then add robotics, 3D printing or other specialized equipment when the curriculum and supervision plan are ready.

Start with the activities, not the shopping list

MIT Edgerton Center’s K–12 Maker Lab guidance recommends identifying educational goals and anticipated activities before setting up a makerspace. Decide whether your program will support design and prototyping, coding and electronics, robotics, 3D printing, science investigations, model building, sewing, media documentation or another activity. These choices determine what equipment is useful, how much storage you need and what staff must be prepared to supervise. MIT Edgerton Center: Set Up a Makerspace

  • Match tools and materials to students’ ages, accessibility needs and planned tasks.
  • Estimate how many learners need to work at once; that determines quantities more usefully than a generic lab checklist.
  • Check staff experience, room layout, storage, electrical and facility constraints, and applicable school and local safety requirements.

A STEAM lab can be organized around a project cycle: design, prototype, test and communicate. Plan for students to document and present their work, not just build it.

Build a shared foundation

These categories support many kinds of projects. Select quantities based on enrollment, lessons, storage and replenishment capacity rather than treating every example as essential.

MIT’s makerspace guidance specifically calls for designated material storage and personal storage to help keep work areas usable. MIT Edgerton Center: Set Up a Makerspace

Reusable classroom materials

  • Paper and cardstock, pencils and markers.
  • Student-appropriate scissors, glue and tape.
  • Other basic classroom materials selected for the activities and age group.

Prototyping and experiment consumables

Stock materials that students will use in planned builds and investigations. Depending on the curriculum, examples might include cardboard, cups, foil, toothpicks, clay or modeling material, and safe classroom experiment ingredients. A published school supply list includes cups, foil, baking soda and vinegar, but these are examples—not universal requirements. The Charter School at Waterstone: STEAM Makerspace Supply List

Coding and electronics

If programming and electronics are planned learning goals, consider beginner-appropriate coding resources and electronics components. The University of Illinois Extension’s 2019 STEAM resource catalog illustrates possibilities such as Arduino-related items and other electronics; use it as an example of activity breadth, not as a current product list. Robotics

For robotics projects or competitions, consider programmable kits, compatible parts and the tools needed to assemble and maintain them. New York State procurement materials published around 2024 and Project Lead The Way’s equipment page show robotics kits and parts as school-use categories. They do not establish that a particular kit or quantity suits every school. 3D printing

Buy a 3D printer only if the curriculum, staff supervision, space and safety plan can support it. Include compatible filament or other consumables and a plan for maintenance. Washington State Department of Health guidance for schools recommends that the classroom instructor conduct a pre-use printer safety inspection and points to CDC/NIOSH guidance; this is Washington guidance, not a nationwide legal requirement. Follow the rules and facilities guidance that apply to your school. Washington State Department of Health: 3D Printers

Science and measurement

Add laboratory equipment, experiment supplies and relevant safety equipment for the science activities your school intends to run. Procurement materials identify laboratory and experiment supplies as equipment categories, but the appropriate inventory depends on the investigations and local requirements. Include safety, training and operations in the equipment plan

Safety is part of the lab setup, not a separate concern to address after buying tools. MIT recommends clear warnings, safe-handling procedures, first-aid supplies and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as tool-training resources. Choose signs and PPE for the actual hazards, student ages and local requirements. MIT Edgerton Center: Set Up a Makerspace

For machinery, robotics and power tools, plan for qualified operators, suitable supervision and guarding of moving parts. The University of Pennsylvania’s Environmental Health and Radiation Safety guidance describes these controls as important risk measures; it is not a school-specific regulation. Penn Environmental Health and Radiation Safety: Machinery, Robotics and Power Tool Safety

  • Set age-appropriate procedures for each tool and activity.
  • Train students before use and define who may operate equipment and under what supervision.
  • Provide hazard-matched PPE and first-aid supplies.
  • Inspect equipment as appropriate, including the pre-use 3D-printer inspection recommended in Washington State school guidance.
  • Keep work areas, storage and procedures aligned with school policy and applicable local rules.

  • Facilities: Does it require particular space, ventilation, electrical capacity or other room provisions?
  • Ongoing supplies: Are consumables and compatible replacement parts available?
  • Maintenance and support: Can the school keep it working and provide needed support?
  • Total cost over use: Consider supplies, repairs and replacement parts, not only the initial purchase.

Phase purchases and budget for upkeep

A practical sequence is to establish safe work areas and storage, add reusable and activity-specific consumables, then buy a small number of curriculum-aligned kits. Add specialized machines only when staffing, training, space and maintenance arrangements are in place. This is a planning approach based on goals-first setup and safety considerations, not a required purchasing order.

Budget for recurring consumables, replacement parts, repairs and curriculum refreshes. Project Lead The Way’s equipment page, for example, lists course-specific refill kits, filament and supplemental kits alongside classroom equipment, illustrating why initial purchase price is not the whole cost. Catalog contents and availability can change. Project Lead The Way: STEM Classroom Equipment and Supplies

Supplier catalogs, procurement documents and individual school supply lists are useful for spotting possible categories, not for deciding what every lab must own. New York procurement examples published around 2024 establish examples of categories, not current contract status; the Illinois catalog from 2019 is a breadth example. Verify current availability and suitability with the supplier and your school’s policies before purchasing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
