Choose a solar watch if you want quartz timekeeping powered by light and are comfortable giving it adequate light exposure. Choose an automatic if you value a spring-powered mechanical movement wound by wrist motion. Neither label guarantees a particular accuracy, reserve, or maintenance schedule: compare the specifications and instructions for the exact watch you are considering.
How solar and automatic movements get their energy
Solar: light becomes stored electrical energy
A solar watch uses a cell beneath the dial to convert light into electrical energy, which is stored in a rechargeable battery and used to run the watch. Seiko describes this mechanism in its solar-watch guidance. Solar therefore reduces the need for routine battery replacement, but it is not independent of its environment: the watch needs sufficient light, and charging behavior depends on the model.
Automatic: wrist motion winds a mainspring
An automatic watch stores energy mechanically in a mainspring. In Citizen’s example of the Cal. 0200, movement of the wearer’s arm turns an oscillating weight, which winds the mainspring in the barrel. That describes this movement, not every automatic watch; consult the movement’s own specifications and operating instructions.
Which type is more accurate?
The movement category alone does not tell you the accuracy of a particular watch. Compare the exact model’s stated accuracy, including its measurement period and operating conditions. The available examples below are not a controlled comparison: they involve different movements, conditions, and reporting periods.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Example | Manufacturer-stated accuracy | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Citizen E67 solar caliber | Average monthly accuracy of ±15 seconds | Specified when worn at normal operating temperatures of +5°C to +35°C; see Citizen’s E67 specifications. |
| Citizen Cal. 0200 automatic movement | Average daily accuracy of -3 to +5 seconds | A movement-specific figure published by Citizen; see its Cal. 0200 feature page. |
Mechanical accuracy can vary with use and surroundings. Seiko identifies winding state, arm movement, temperature, and the watch’s position as factors; its accuracy guidance also notes gravity and shock. Mechanical accuracy is commonly assessed as a mean daily rate over a period of actual wear. Seiko Watch Corporation puts it this way: “The accuracy of the mechanical watch changes slightly day by day, depending on several factors such as the amount the spring is wound, movements of your arm, temperature, and the position of the watch.” See Seiko’s mechanical-watch accuracy guidance.
How long will each run when it is not being worn?
Solar reserve depends on the model and its settings
Citizen says a fully powered Eco-Drive can run for over six months in total darkness, but its support information describes a broader, model-dependent range and exceptions. Treat reserve as a specification for the individual watch, not a universal solar figure. For the E67, Citizen lists approximately six months when fully charged with power save deactivated, or approximately one year with power save activated. The figures depend on the conditions and daily functions described on the E67 specification page. It also lists approximately four days of reserve for the insufficient-charge warning function.

Automatic reserve is movement-specific
An automatic runs on the energy stored in its mainspring, which is wound by wrist motion in the cited Citizen Cal. 0200 example. Check the specific movement’s stated power reserve and winding instructions. The cited sources do not establish one reserve figure that applies to all automatic watches.
What attention does each type need?
- Solar: Give the watch the light exposure specified for its model. If an Eco-Drive stops, Citizen says charging time varies by model and directs owners to the instruction manual. If the watch does not resume after charging, Citizen advises contacting a service center; see its Eco-Drive support FAQ.
- Automatic: Ensure the movement is wound as directed, whether through wearing it or by following the model’s instructions. Winding state can affect its running behavior and accuracy.
The cited information does not establish a universal service interval for either category. It also does not support a general conclusion about which type costs less to own over time; actual care depends on the watch and its manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose by how you want the watch to work
| If you prioritize… | Consider… | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz timekeeping and operation powered by light | A solar watch | Accuracy specification, charging guidance, dark-running reserve, and any power-save behavior. |
| A spring-driven mechanical movement wound by wrist motion | An automatic watch | Movement-specific accuracy, power reserve, and winding instructions. |
When comparing specific watches, look beyond the movement label. Match the published accuracy figure to its conditions and measurement period, and check the features and instructions that matter for your routine. A solar model still needs light; an automatic’s performance depends in part on its winding state and use.
