Upgrade every affected Atlassian Data Center product to the fixed version listed for its release line, or to a later version. If you can’t upgrade right away, take the instance off the internet or restrict external access. After that, apply a mitigation that suits the product, and review your access logs for path-traversal attempts.
This guide is based on Atlassian’s advisory for CVE-2026-21589, “Arbitrary File Access Vulnerability impacts Multiple Products.” Atlassian released and last modified it on October 5, 2026. Fixed-version lists change as new releases ship, so check the advisory and your product’s release notes before you start your change.
What the flaw is and who is affected
Atlassian says all versions of these products are affected until they reach a fixed release:
- Bitbucket Data Center
- Confluence Data Center
- Jira Service Management Data Center
- Jira Software Data Center
- Bamboo Data Center
- Crowd Data Center
- Crucible
- Fisheye
An unauthenticated attacker can access specific files within the web application root. Atlassian says the attacker needs to know the exact filename and path. The flaw does not allow directory enumeration or listing. Some configurations may hold sensitive files, and that raises the risk. Atlassian also says it cannot confirm whether customer instances have been affected.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Atlassian rates the issue Critical, CVSS 9.3. That is the vendor’s own internal assessment. The advisory tells administrators to evaluate how it applies to their own environments. In practice, your exposure depends on what is reachable from outside, what files sit under the web root, and what a reader of those files could do with them.
Fixed versions from the October 5, 2026 advisory
Find the row for each product you run and move to the listed version for your branch, or to a later one. Don’t carry version numbers from one product to another. Jira Software and Jira Service Management share some numbers but not all.

Atlassian recommends patching each installation to a fixed version or the latest version, and it recommends the fixed LTS version or later. Versions that are outside support may also be affected. If you run one, you will probably need to upgrade across support lines instead of finding a patch for your current version. The advisory gives the fixed versions but no universal rolling-upgrade runbook, so follow each product’s own release notes and upgrade guide.
Step 1: Inventory what you run
Before you change anything, write down the following for every deployment:

- Each installed Atlassian product and its exact version.
- Every cluster node. Fixes and mitigations have to cover all of them.
- Bitbucket mirrors and mirror-farm nodes, if you use them.
- Which instances are reachable from the internet, including ones that require users to log in. Atlassian’s guidance explicitly covers publicly accessible instances that require authentication.
- Support status, so you know whether the upgrade is a routine patch or a move to a supported branch.
- Crucible and Fisheye installs. They are easy to forget, and they sit on a separate 4.9.15 fix.
Step 2: Cut down external exposure first
If you can’t patch immediately, Atlassian’s first recommendation is to remove the instance from the internet or restrict external network access. This is the fastest way to reduce risk, and you can do it before any mitigation is tested. Restrict by source network, VPN, or an allow-list at your firewall or reverse proxy. Leaving the application login screen as the only barrier is not enough here, because the flaw is exploitable without authenticating.
Step 3: Upgrade to a fixed version
- Pick the target version for each product from the table above. Prefer the fixed LTS release or later, as Atlassian recommends.
- Read the release notes and upgrade notes for that version. Check marketplace app compatibility, database and operating system support, and any Java requirements.
- Take a backup of the database, the shared home, each node’s local home and the installation directories. Test the restore path if you have never done it.
- Rehearse the upgrade in a staging copy where you can, then run it through your normal change-control process.
- Upgrade every node in the cluster, and every Bitbucket mirror, to the same fixed version.
- Confirm the running version on each node afterwards, and check the application’s own health screens and logs.
Step 4: If the upgrade must wait, apply a temporary mitigation
Atlassian describes several temporary controls. They don’t replace the patch. Use only one that fits the product and your deployment.

| Control | Products covered | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Remove or restrict internet access | Any affected deployment, where possible | Immediate exposure reduction while you prepare the upgrade. |
| WAF or reverse-proxy regex filter | All affected products | Implementation depends on your proxy or WAF. Use Atlassian’s regex exactly and test the encoded traversal patterns. |
| Tomcat RewriteValve | Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, Crowd | Back up configuration, configure each relevant node, install rewrite.config, then restart. |
Bitbucket urlrewrite.xml rule |
Bitbucket | Apply the rule on every cluster node and on mirrors or mirror-farm nodes as directed, then restart. |
Crucible and Fisheye are not listed against the Tomcat or Bitbucket methods, so for those two products use the proxy or WAF filter and access restriction until you can upgrade.
How to avoid breaking the mitigation
- Copy the exact rule from the advisory. The regex and the configuration are not reproduced here on purpose. A single transcription error, such as a dropped escape character, can leave the control ineffective or block legitimate traffic.
- Back up before editing. Keep a copy of every file you change on every node.
- Cover every node. A rule on one node of a load-balanced cluster only protects the share of requests that reach it. The same goes for Bitbucket mirrors.
- Restart as directed so the rule is actually loaded, then test it.
- Test with encoded patterns. Send traversal-style requests, including URL-encoded forms, from a test client and confirm they are rejected, while normal pages and API calls still work. Use a non-production copy or a harmless target path.
- Record the change so it gets removed or reviewed after the upgrade.
Step 5: Check whether the instance was accessed
Atlassian cannot confirm whether any customer instance has been affected, and it recommends engaging your local security team. Its detection approach uses your access logs:

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Collect access logs from every node, and from any reverse proxy or load balancer in front of them. Proxy logs may hold the original request before any normalisation.
- Decode the request line, up to two passes of URL decoding, to catch single and double-encoded payloads.
- Search the decoded text for
..directly next to/, a backslash, or::. - Alternatively, search the raw lines with the regular expression published in the advisory.
The script below is a rough triage aid for the same idea. It is not Atlassian’s regex, so run the advisory’s pattern as well. It reads log lines from standard input and prints any line where the raw text, or the text after one or two URL-decoding passes, has .. beside a slash, backslash or ::.
import re, sys
from urllib.parse import unquote
pat = re.compile(r'..(?:[/\]|::)|(?:[/\]|::)..')
for line in sys.stdin:
s = line
hit = bool(pat.search(s))
for _ in range(2):
if hit:
break
s = unquote(s)
hit = bool(pat.search(s))
if hit:
sys.stdout.write(line)
Use it like this: python3 triage.py < access_log.txt > suspects.txt. Expect some false positives from relative paths in referrer fields or odd client behaviour, so read each hit with its status code, source address and the path requested.
What a hit or a clean result means
- A match is not proof of compromise. Look at whether the response succeeded and which file was requested. Treat a successful response for a sensitive file as an incident.
- No match is not proof of safety. Atlassian does not say a clean log means no compromise, and logs may be incomplete, rotated away or missing from an upstream device.
- If you find a probable access, hand it to your security team. Think about which files could have been read. If configuration files, credentials or keys sit under the web root, rotate those secrets as a precaution after the patch.
Hardening checks after patching
- Verify the version on every node, mirror, and standalone Crucible or Fisheye instance against the table above.
- Keep the proxy or WAF rule until all nodes are confirmed patched, then decide deliberately whether to keep it as defence in depth.
- Ask whether each instance really needs to be public. If not, leave external access restricted.
- Move any sensitive files that live under the application’s web root to a location outside it.
- Subscribe to Atlassian’s security advisories so that the next fixed-version table reaches you the day it is published.
When to get outside help
If your team has no one who can review logs or judge what a file read could expose, bring in your internal security team or a qualified incident-response provider. The advisory names no particular provider, so choose one on its Atlassian experience and its ability to review logs across a cluster.
