They infer the impactor’s size from crater evidence and physical models; crater diameter alone cannot reveal a unique asteroid size.
How can scientists tell when an impact happened?
The answer depends on what material survived and which event its geological clock records. An age is not simply the age of the rocks around a crater: researchers look for minerals or melt formed or isotopically reset by the impact, then interpret the measured age in that sample’s geological context. Radiometric dating measures radioactive parent isotopes and their decay products; different minerals and isotope systems respond differently to heat and later alteration. The USGS guide to dating rocks explains the basic principle and why the material being dated matters.
| Approach | What the age represents | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Radiometric dating of impact-related material | The formation or isotopic resetting of a dated mineral or impact melt. | Interpretation depends on the sample, isotope system, and any later heating or alteration. |
| Crater-count chronology | A model age for a planetary surface or geologic unit, inferred from its crater population. | It depends on crater identification, preservation, statistical analysis, and the chronology model; it is not a direct radiometric date. |
Radiometric dates depend on the sample
At the Manson impact structure in Iowa, Kunk and colleagues used argon-40/argon-39 age-spectrum dating on shocked microcline from the crystalline central uplift. Their 1989 USGS publication reports 65.7 ± 1.0 million years for that sample and interprets the result as indistinguishable from the K–T boundary age within analytical precision. This is a study-specific measurement, not a general age for impact craters. Shock and later hydrothermal heating can affect isotopic retention, so the method and sample context belong alongside any reported age. USGS: Kunk et al., “40Ar-39Ar dating of the Manson impact structure”.
Zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometry offers another way to investigate impact heating. A NASA-hosted study applying it to impactites from Chicxulub and the Ries structure describes how zircon’s response varies with heating temperature and duration, shock microstructures, and subsequent hydrothermal resetting. A zircon date may therefore record a thermal history rather than a simple, unaltered moment of impact. NASA Technical Reports Server: zircon impact-crater thermochronometry.

Crater counts give model ages for planetary terrain
On Mars and other planetary surfaces, geologists map craters on a geologic unit and compare the number and sizes of those craters with a chronology model. The result is an estimate of the unit’s surface history, not a direct date for a particular impact or a radiometric measurement. Resurfacing can bury or erase craters; preservation, counting thresholds, image data, and choices about which features qualify also shape the count. USGS authors describe the method and its application to Mars units, while separate USGS recommendations address statistical analysis and reporting of crater size-frequency distributions. USGS: crater-based dating of geological units on Mars; USGS: revised methods for analyzing crater size-frequency distributions.
How do geologists estimate the asteroid’s size?
They use crater dimensions and morphology alongside ejecta, impact melt, shocked minerals, and the geology of the target, then compare that evidence with impact-scaling relationships or numerical models. Full-scale planetary impacts cannot be recreated in a laboratory, so scaling laws connect experiments and physical models to larger events. Those relationships depend on impact speed, projectile and target properties, gravity, and whether material strength or gravity dominates crater growth. The foundations and limits of impact-crater scaling are discussed in a NASA-hosted report on impact crater scaling laws.

For example, ejecta distribution reflects not only the impactor’s size, but also its velocity and trajectory, as well as the target’s lithology and coherence. The USGS account of Meteor Crater discusses these relationships and the crater’s impact evidence. A rim-to-rim measurement by itself cannot distinguish among all the possible combinations of impactor, trajectory, and target conditions. USGS: “Characterizing Meteor Crater Impact Melts Through Geochemistry and Textural Analysis”.
Meteor Crater shows the scale difference
The USGS report describes Meteor Crater in Arizona as about 1.2 km in diameter and 180 m deep, with a formation age of approximately 50,000 years. It summarizes earlier studies that estimate an iron-nickel impactor about 30 m across, traveling at 12–20 km/s. These are case-specific published estimates based on the crater and its setting, not a conversion rule for other craters. The report also describes impact melts—mixtures of melted target rock and projectile material—and shocked rocks, including high-pressure silica phases and shock-melted glass. Such evidence helps establish and characterize an impact, while age and size estimates still rely on their respective methods and context. USGS report on Meteor Crater.

Why can the size estimate change?
Impact models must account for conditions that affect how energy enters the ground and how a crater forms. The important assumptions include:
- Impact speed and angle: They change energy transfer and the pattern of crater formation and ejecta.
- Projectile properties: Density, composition, and structural coherence influence how it couples energy into the target.
- Target geology: Strength, layering, porosity, fractures, and large-scale heterogeneity affect crater growth.
- Gravity and crater regime: The relevant scaling differs depending on whether gravity or material strength controls the process.
- Modification after impact: Erosion, burial, tectonic change, and resurfacing can alter crater dimensions or the population available to count.
Bennu illustrates why a scaling result from one kind of surface should not be transferred uncritically to another. A 2022 NASA-hosted study analyzed 1,560 craters on the asteroid and reported a transition associated with the boulder population at crater diameters of roughly 2–3 m; it also found different crater-retention-age estimates for smaller and larger crater bins. The result concerns Bennu’s rubble-pile surface and that study’s analysis, not a calibration for Earth. NASA Technical Reports Server: Bennu crater population study.

For a reported age, identify the sample, dated material, isotope system, uncertainty, and any evidence of later resetting. For an impactor-size estimate, state the crater evidence and target setting along with the assumed speed, angle, projectile properties, and model. Those details explain what the number means—and where its uncertainty comes from.
