To enable Developer Mode on a retail Xbox, install the Dev Mode Activation app, use its activation code in Microsoft’s account flow, then choose Switch and restart in the app. To return to normal gaming, open Dev Home and select Leave developer mode. The console restarts into Retail Mode.

What changes between Developer Mode and Retail Mode?

Developer Mode and Retail Mode are separate console environments. Developer Mode opens Dev Home for development and app-testing activities; Retail Mode opens the ordinary Xbox Home experience, where you can play retail games. Switching modes restarts the console.

These instructions describe the documented activation-app and activation-code process for a retail Xbox console. The detailed activation steps are from Microsoft’s Xbox UWP documentation copy, while Microsoft Learn’s FAQ confirms the mode-identification and return-to-Retail steps. Menu labels and activation screens may vary with console software, region, or account state, so follow Microsoft’s current activation flow if it differs from the sequence below.

How to enable Developer Mode on a retail Xbox

  1. On the console, search the Xbox Store for Dev Mode Activation and install the app.
  2. Open Dev Mode Activation and note the activation code displayed on the console.
  3. Use Microsoft’s activation flow, sign in with the developer account, and enter the code. Follow the prompts to accept and activate, then wait for the console activation process to finish.
  4. Reopen the activation app and select Switch and restart. After the restart, the console opens in Developer Mode.

The documented process does not establish that every console version or account sees identical screens. If the activation app or Microsoft’s account flow presents different instructions, use the current Microsoft flow rather than relying on a guessed menu path. Microsoft’s Xbox activation instructions describe the app-and-code sequence.

How to switch back to Retail Mode

  1. While in Developer Mode, open Dev Home.
  2. Select Leave developer mode.
  3. Allow the Xbox to restart. It returns to Retail Mode.

Microsoft’s FAQ says users who want to play games can use the Leave developer mode button in Dev Home to switch back to Retail Mode. Microsoft Learn’s UWP applications FAQ confirms this return path.

How to tell which mode the Xbox is in

Press the Xbox/Home button on the controller. If it opens Dev Home, the console is in Developer Mode. If it opens the ordinary retail Home experience, it is in Retail Mode. Microsoft also notes that inaccessible Store or Live services, or games that do not work, can be signs of Developer Mode, but the Home-screen check is the direct way to identify the current mode.

What happens to games, apps, and saves?

Microsoft says installed games and apps are not lost when leaving the Developer Program. For saves made while online, Microsoft describes recovery through cloud saves. The online condition matters: do not assume that an offline save has been synced to the cloud. See Microsoft’s FAQ for its explanation.

Limits and cautions to know

  • Activation limit: Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode Activation Program agreement, last updated December 23, 2021, limits activation to three Xbox One consoles at a time for an individual or company. This is a statement in that dated agreement, not a claim about a newly announced 2026 policy. Read the Xbox One Developer Mode Activation Program agreement.
  • Possible update impact: The same 2021 agreement says Devkit updates may not be available to non-Devkit consoles and could temporarily diminish or remove console functionality.
  • x86 development: Microsoft’s FAQ says Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the Store. This is the specific limitation described there, not a complete statement of all current Xbox development policy. See Microsoft Learn’s FAQ.
  • Development kits are different: Microsoft’s GDK documentation distinguishes retail-console Developer Mode from development-kit workflows; some development-kit guidance is restricted to Xbox developer-program members. Switching modes on a retail Xbox does not reconfigure a managed development kit or change an Xbox Live sandbox. Microsoft’s GDK documentation.
