Yes. According to Telegram’s FAQ, you can send files of any type up to 2 GB each for free. Telegram Premium raises the limit to 4 GB per file. The limit applies to the sender. The person receiving the file doesn’t need Premium.

Telegram Premium 4 GB No

Telegram’s FAQ puts it this way: “Send and receive files of any type, up to 2 GB in size each (or 4 GB with Premium), access them instantly on your other devices.” The figures were checked against Telegram’s FAQ and Premium FAQ on 7 October 2026. The FAQ notes that Telegram changes over time, so the numbers could change.

What to do based on your file size

Up to 2 GB

Send it as normal. Free accounts are covered, and no subscription is needed.

Over 2 GB and up to 4 GB

You need Telegram Premium to upload the file. The person receiving it does not. Telegram’s 2022 Premium announcement says: “All Telegram users can download these extra-large documents, regardless of whether they are subscribed to Telegram Premium.”

The recipient should still update their Telegram app. Telegram’s Terms of Service say documents larger than 2 GB may only display correctly in an up-to-date app.

Over 4 GB

Telegram’s official material doesn’t describe any way to upload a single file this large. Your options are general workarounds, not Telegram features:

  • Split the file into parts, for example with an archive tool, and send each part. The recipient has to put the parts back together.
  • Compress or re-encode the file, which works best for video.
  • Use a separate file-transfer or cloud storage service and share the link in Telegram.

Things worth knowing

  • The limit is per file, not per message or per day. Several files can each be under the limit.
  • It’s a size cap, not a speed promise. Large uploads still depend on your connection.
  • Send as a file for original quality. Telegram says any file type is supported, and sending a video or photo as a file rather than as media is the usual way to avoid compression. Check the attach menu in your app for the exact label.
  • Files are available on your other devices. The FAQ says files can be accessed instantly across devices.

How big is 4 GB?

Telegram’s 2022 announcement, “700 Million Users and Telegram Premium” (published 19 June 2022), said 4 GB is enough for about 4 hours of 1080p video or 18 days of high-quality audio. That is Telegram’s own illustration, not an independent test. Actual sizes vary with bitrate and codec.

Is Premium worth it just for large files?

Only if you regularly send files between 2 GB and 4 GB. If your files fit under 2 GB, or you can split or compress them, the free tier is enough. Premium pricing varies by region and platform, so check the offer shown in your own app before you decide.
